"The Tigers have traditionally been strong on special teams. According to ESPN's team efficiency ratings, which aim to measure the point value of a unit on a per-play basis, they had the third-most efficient unit in the country in 2014."

An explosive and veteran offense, terrific special teams, and talented JF coached defense makes us one of the handful of teams with a realistic chance of landing the Access Bowl bid slot. It is a great time to be a Tiger fan. 03-thumbsup

It's one third of the game.
would love to read this but the commercial appeal's website login is screwed up.
Coach Shibest is a wizard at special teams. Even when Tommy West was winning here, his special teams were often a disaster. Gotti was a bright spot, but West fired several special teams coaches. I remember one time that he made himself special teams coach, but that did not work out any better.
Depth is a huge part of special teams success. The ability to use athletes on SP that normally would have been starting or significant contributors makes a bid difference. Coach Fuente has done an excellent job raising the level of athleticism across the board an imo SP have benefited greatly. Plus like you said Shibest is a helluva coach.
It's been 19 years since the tigers have returned a kickoff back for a touchdown. I'm pretty sure that's the longest current drought in college football.

Just a little bit.
The turnaround in our special teams performance since Shibest took over has been spectacular to say the least, and the importance can hardly be overstated. I took the opportunity to personally praise and thank Coach Shibest last winter. He was very modest about it, saying "it all starts at the top", in deference to his boss, but he obviously deserves a ton of credit.
Punt kicker U ?
Football season is so close. Can't wait!
our special teams have sucked for a while till JF got here!
