With the new white uniforms released Monday, we were wondering how everyone feels about them. I know we had the whole controversy regarding whether or not we should put the W&M Cypher at center court not too long ago, but how does everyone feel about the logo on the collar of our white football uniforms? It definitely seems like a lot of our teams are now implementing the logo one way or another.

Here's our article about the new unis with a poll at the bottom to gauge peoples' reaction to them. Roll Tribe.

The cypher is still a conglomeration of squiggles which are great on graduation gowns and prestigious academic awards but is not reconizable on athletic uniforms. The green uniform shown which has the simple WM will be much more visible on t.v. and in game action photos..
If they must put the cypher on a jersey, why not put it on the used for home games since Tribe fans understand what it is . IMHO
I really dislike the Green jersey and green pants look. Unis that are all one color, unless they are road whites like Penn State, wind up reminding me of what high school teams wear. I don't like em. I like the contrast of the green jersey and the gold pants.
The all-green jersey with the silver stripe is the historical standard and, by far, the uniform of choice...going back to the great Indian teams of the early Forties. There is a reason the term, "Big Green" resonated then in the media and has carried through the decades despite the all-green uniforms making just an occasional appearance (as it did last season!).

Coach Laycock pulls the all-green out when he believes the team will get a lift from wearing them.

As far as the cypher goes it is awful, marketing-wise. Other than W&M students and alums,
nobody knows what it is...even those who know have a hard time figuring it out.

We should, as do many college teams now, put William & Mary on the shirt front right above
the number. That way people watching TV or glancing at a newspaper photo know it is William & Mary...not some inscrutable cypher or equally unknown "Tribe" (other than Tribe fans, grads, students and some state of Virginia residents, nobody knows what school is the Tribe...we are not a recognizable nickname like The Fighting Irish or Crimson Tide).

Basic marketing 101----promote your recognizable name.
Basically, the cypher is just too "busy" to be used in anything smaller than, say, a court or stadium. It just becomes undistinguishable from a distance. Those pictures give you the perspective of being about 5 feet away from the player and, even from that distance, it looks like a star or maybe a bird of some kind. Just doesn't work in a small setting.

Agreed. It's a high school look. Any time a team wears dark pants it seems like they're trying to hide stains because they don't have the money to properly wash the uniforms. I know that's not the case with us but it still doesn't look good. And I don't care how traditional the green over green look is. The gold-green-gold set is a traditional look for the ages. I just don't want us to end up looking like JMU.
I was a big fan of the green on green uniforms, and from what people have said, the players liked them too. I recall when the uniforms debuted at Homecoming, there were a lot of positive responses from people on here as well. Plenty of schools these days do a solid color type thing for one or two big games per year. Not everyone will always like every uniform decision, but I personally was a fan. I like our classic look of the gold pants with green or white alternating tops for home or away; it's a classic look and fits with our style of football. That being said, for a few years I've lamented the fact that we couldn't do something "funky" once or twice a year for a big game. The solid "big green" uniforms would not be considered "funky" for most programs, but for WM it was great.
+2 on Big Green Unis. Big games only.

Cypher would look better on one side of the helmet with Script Tribe on the other. William & Mary in big letters across the chest.

I disagree with the idea of NOT using the cypher, simply because people are unfamiliar with it or you think it is undeCYPHERable...get it? Use the brand that people know, but add to it with a logo that the NCAA will ALLOW. The block W&M isnt so great without the feathers, so we need something else. Logos are only recognized after sustained usage. Nobody would know that a big tree represented Stanford if their teams had no success. It took time for people to recognize it.
I agree on the size of the cypher on the jersey. I like the gold pants, gold helmets, and either white or green jersey's. The one color uniforms look high schoolish to me also, however if they give the team a boost, that's more important than what I like...

The cypher is actually a microdot, which, when seen under a very high power microscope spells the word "INDIANS". The plan is to refer to the teams as "The Fighting Microdots" initially, but to gradually increase the size of the "cypher" over the years so that the word "INDIANS" is clearly recognizable from outter space; and eventually, we will be known as "The Fighting Indians" again!!!!!!!!!!

THE HORROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks great on a lot of things--such as diplomas and napkins--but doesn't exactly instill fear into the hearts of our opponents.

This looks like something from medieval times! Maybe that's appropriate? The all green uni's are bush to the max. Are we channeling the big green from Chocktahatchee HS in Ft Walton Beach? My wife's alma mater.
All whites with gold helmets would make us look faster.
