from 2012 press release:
July 19, 2012
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University athletic director Dr. Wood Selig and Max Media general manager Dave Paulus announced a new contract today that extends the broadcast coverage of all ODU football, men's and women's basketball games, selected baseball games and coaches shows through 2015-16.

Personally I hope AM850 makes a bid; add them to FoxSports radio, NASCAR, Barclays English Premier League soccer; and unfortunately UVa coverage

anything would be better than Cattles et al
If Max Media does not get renewed, I think Bobby Hollywood goes away. (this should be part of the deal regardless)

I do think being on a station with a locally hosted daily show is important, and 850 am has the national Fox Sports schedule all day.
On the most recent Wood on Wednesday, back in June or so, it ended a little weird.

I guess it was the last segment that ODU had paid Max Media for this year and Cattles something along the lines of it was nice talking to you Wood, will pick things back up in a few months.

As if Wood is only a worthy guest when the checks are rolling in. It seemed like a clunky way to get out of a segment.

Carttles only cares for the Patriots and beer runs.

Is he the guy that runs around with the mike and tells everyone to get loud?

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure. He's very annoying. If we're paying for him in the contract, I'm glad they're renegotiating a new one.
Yet another player in the sports radio ring: Tony Mercurio is back on 1490 AM with a twice a week show...
The 1490AM Outlaw format is old school country radio plus Langley Speedway coverage and some NASCAR programming (I think they are adding the Camping World Truck Series and the XFINITY Series).
I still think that ODU may look into 850AM for the next broadcast agreement.
Sooner or later the Tides/Admirals/Ken Young will demand that all their programming be on one flagship (hockey is on 1650AM), then MaxMedia will have to choose between ODU and Tides/Admirals.

I dont like him but at least he gave a little love and some mashed potato & gravy to us.
He also gave free tickets to Missouri fans for our home basketball game against them if I remember correctly. heck with that guy.

Come on now, if ODU wants to be taken seriously they cannot have their broadcasts on crappy AM radio. Negotiate with a low performing FM station to do live broadcasts on Saturday. Anything but back to AM...
Nothing wrong with AM radio. Both Richmond sports stations are on AM. However, ODU is played in Richmond on AM 950's, FM 100.5 simulcast station.

He had his head up JMU's collective arse for a long time. Which leads me to the occasional disclaimer I issue when Mercurio comes up: Unless you're based in Missouri or you're food, the only time he gives a crap about your program is if he and/or his station are contracted to you. For a long time, the only ODU sport he consistently cared about was women's basketball, because WGH had the contract for them but not the men. He couldn't stand the Tides until they got the contract and he got to play pattycake with Dave Rosenfield in the radio booth at Harbor Park. And the Admirals never got more than lip service, even when they had that 28-game winning streak.

Now I don't begrudge a man for making a living; you do what you gotta do to keep the lights on. But let us not confuse contractually-obligated enthusiasm with the real thing.
