It will be interesting to see if any of the redshirt freshmen push for any of these spots. I'm a little surprised Gardner is already at LT protecting Bell's blindside after moving from tight end where he didn't have to pass block.

Some great tackles were former tight ends. Jason Peters comes to mind. Not comparing Gardner to peters, but if he doesn't lose much quickness with his weight gain, then he could be a pleasant surprise at LT.

And Eric Fisher from that school to the North was a converted Tight End. Our last great left tackle, T.J. Lang also switched positions starting his career as a defensive lineman. Genyk had success moving players to different positions (Lang, Jason Jones, Deslauriers, Roberson, Bohnet).

Indeed, it appears that Genyk and CC are cut from the same cloth. English was a much different coach.
Genyk got some talent, for sure. We haven't seen that influx of talent here since he left.

I always thought Genyk was a better coach but English a better recruiter.

I believe English was the 2nd best FB recruiter at EMU behind Ron Cooper, who was excellent. (Ron Cooper was not a good X and Os man. I remember Dr. Tom Slade got fired for criticizing on game broadcasts the team offense. Anyone remember him saying to the effect "the ugliest option" you'd ever seen. I believe Michael Armour ran it but he wasn't an option QB).

Yes, Bob, my memory goes back decades too. 03-lmfao
Good comments, totally agree with Gardner I always thought he was a more blocking te, he should have more speed than the average OL, I look for some of our new TEs to be converted to OL in the future.

While the OL last year has lots of seniors and depth it was a disappointment, we never really got a power running game established to set up the pass. Bell gets through the holes quicker than most of RBs which means the OL doesn't have to hold its blocks as long. I think I made the comment somewhere else than the Gardner switching to OL tipped me off that some of the redshirt OL aren't ready yet. We tried to recruit some JUCO OL but didn't get them another tip off and of course the graduate transfer from Clemson. I think the true frosh in this class are a notch above CC's first class re OL talent. I agree that CC likes faster linemen.

I agree with Genyk comments his recruiting classes were ranked very low and his retention of his recruiting classes was poor as well. Based on his first two classes I think CC is a better recruiter than Genyk but agree that like Genyk CC recruits athletes who play football raw athletic ability is the key factor along with character.

I honestly believe we have the best strength and conditioning coach in the MAC if not Div I football. He could make much more $$$$ in the NFL or other Div I programs than here at EMU. He does it because of his promise to CC and I think he wants to see us turn it around as much as CC does. I really like the staff CC has they seem to work well together and with the kids.

I think Gardner will work out at OT. Certainly wasn't going to keep up with the new TE group coming in. I also think Thornton is better suited at guard. We will see soon enough.

Agree with '79 - last year's line - very disappointing. Maybe too much holdover from English and his style - assuming CC likes a more mobile O-line, rather than road graders that worked generally well in 2011-2013.
Agree with the comments above. My ? is whether or not Terrell is still a road grader or trying to become a quick footed OLinenman (I'm guessing he is still over 325 and a road grader).

Last year we had a lot of buzz about Bronson Hill and Brogan Roback and the new coaching staff--all 3 kinda fizzled on us. Then there was the new turf... I don't feel the same anticipation this year. Reggie Bell and Pat O'Connor are compelling, who else is going to be the talk of camp this year?

Hey, at least we're not talking about another rape and/or murder involving an EMU athlete.
Dear holybovine,
I agree.

Dear Bob,
Roback got injured. Orbital fracture or fractures as I recall. The coaching staff still needs to have time to work with their systems, and hopefully get more talented recruits into those systems.
I will agree with Hill fizzling. He just didn't seem like the player he was, the previous year.

Hill is in an NFL camp. Why couldn't Creighton find a bigger role for him? When you are a team lacking in talent, you have to find a way to utilize the assets you do have. Creighton did not get the most out of him, that's on him. As for Roback, we still don't know the reason why he got his face smashed in.

I didn't realize there was a mystery there.

English couldn't get Hill to play up to his potential either. Bronson Hill was a difficult cat to work with.

Total mystery. Creighton has never issued a statement on it and basically it was the elephant in the room all season. Nothing to see here, nothing to see, move along.

I'm not sure that he needed to say anything. Suffice it to say it's been handled.

It was? What was done? Of course he needed to say something! A student athlete suffered bodily harm which prevented him from being able to play all season, possibly at the hands of another player and he had nothing to say? What kind of leadership is that?
I do not share your view. What I mean by that is the team does not have to come out to you or any one of us and explain anything. This idea that as fans we "have a right" to know every detail about everything that goes on is a result of the TMZ generation.

The kind that keeps team problems in-house, the kind of leadership that solves problems without airing dirty laundry to the world. The kind of leadership that doesn't embarrass student athletes in the media or for the entertainment of a surly curmudgeon. There is an old leadership motto that goes something like this "praise in public, discipline in private". Contrary to your belief Bob, you aren't entitled to any type of explanation, and perhaps if you cared more about the kids in the program and less about wins and losses you would understand that Chris Creighton is a class act and has done nothing that requires him to explain anything to you. If you could stop whining for a couple days that would be great.

Well said.
With all due respect, this isn't Division II football. Rest assured, if Connor Cook got his face messed up over there at MSU and Coach Dantonio didn't address the media about it, there would be a national outcry. That also applies to the second and third string QB's as well. It is part of a coaches job to explain things to the media, fans, alumni, potential recruit's parents. EVERYONE is entitled to an explanation when an assault in committed in the football program, well normal DI programs, that is. That is why he gets paid more than the important EMU employees, like you know, the professors.
You guys are right ..
The truth is, that Roback got his face smashed in by a DRUNK teamate. And this teamate got to keep playing for emu!! .For you that were at the Morgan State game, Roback pulled out the game out and got a EMU the victory!! Roback started the Old Dominion game and had 4-5 drop passes in a rainstorm. Even though you didn't hear from the coaches, Roback had a GREAt spring ball!!!!!! Isn't it funny, that Bronson Hill is playing in the NFL , And last year he was Wide receiver for EMU..I wonder how Rob Boldens career would ended up if his 75 yard TD run would have counted against Buffalo. Yes Reggie had a great 72 yard run, but Rob Bolden had a 70 plus run that was called back ,because of a peronal foul'!!!!!!!!!!
Bob, you and I simply do not share the same view on this. I believe it's very arrogant to think that you are owed an explanation. Frankly it's none of your business.
The interview with CC about the fourth practice is revealing, note the inflection in his voice as he talks about this year's class and its not until almost the end of the interview that he talks about the redshirted class (his first recruiting class). He does verify what I wrote a few days ago about the offensive line and "settling" for Gardner. He also discusses more in depth the DB situation.
