Tired of reading all the what-if haggling on the other thread, I started looking info about the Seahawks:

After two straight years as co-champions of the Northeast Conference, Wagner is predicted to be fourth in the seven-team league in 2015.

Three Seahawks were named Pre-Season All-NEC:

>> 5th-year senior 6-2, 295 defensive end Al "Not Related to the Hall of Fame Viking" Page,

>> Senior 6-4, 235 tight end Ryan Owens, and

>> Junior, 6-6, 290 offensive lineman Matt Diaz.

Page was an off-the-radar Rutgers recruit from the Bronx, coming from a high school (Christopher Columbus) that was winless his freshman-junior years -- ultimately losing 28 games in a row -- with a slim roster of as few as 28 players. He transferred to Wagner from Rutgers in February 2014, however. "It wasn’t a good fit," Page said "I’m a big guy, a nose tackle, and Rutgers wanted me down to the 250-260 range in their 3-4 defensive scheme."

He was First-Team All-NEC last year, with 45 tackles, including 29 solo stops and 18 tackles for loss (4th in the NEC). He was named to the 2015 STATS FCS Preseason All-America Third Team.

Wagner has a new head football coach this year: Jason Houghtaling. He succeeded Walt Hameline, who led the Seahawks for 34 years (but remains as Wagner's Athletic Director). Houghtaling is no stranger, however, having been an Wagner assistant for seven seasons, including offensive coordinator during Wagner’s 2012 and 2014 NEC title runs. (He was offensive coordinator at Cornell during the 2013 season.)

Here's a link to the Seahawks' football page: http://www.wagnerathletics.com/index.asp...=football&. Here's a link to Wagner's 2015 Pre-season Prospectus: http://www.wagnerathletics.com/documents...PECTUS.pdf.

They take a week off after our game, then play 10 consecutive weeks, including a trip to Provo to play Brigham Young on October 24.

In their only FBS game last year, Wagner lost @FIU, 34-3, in their second game of the season. In 2013, their lost their FBS game @Syracuse, 54-0, in their 3rd game of the year. In 2012, the Seahawks lost their opening game @FAU, 7-3.

In 2010-11 they played Cornell, home & home, winning first at home, 41-7, then losing in Ithaca, 31-7.

I found no Wagner fan/message board. There weren't even any Wagner fans on the FCS anygivensunday board.
I'll (maybe) surprise Mike with some obscure facts about Columbus High School. I'm very familiar with it since my oldest two brothers graduated from there (along with the Son of Sam David Berkowitz who was there a year or two before them I believe). What I didn't know about Columbus is that it closed down last year, and also is the alma mater of less infamous folks such as designer Calvin Klein and actress Anne Bancroft.

According to their Website, The Wagner football stadium seats 3,300. Field turf installed a few years ago!
Just wondering....when was the last time Rice took on a football opponent that went by the designation "college" instead of "university" or "academy" or "institute"?

Never have played Boston College.

My guess would be the last time we played Texas A&M before it changed names from "The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas" to "Texas A&M University"....which would've been, what, about 1962???

Before that, maybe Santa Clara in 1950?
Interesting question.

Wagner is one of the few colleges that fields a Div I football team - remarkable that they do, actually.

Boston College is a misnomer.

Few opportunities to play colleges now that Div I teams only play other Div I.

I think you're right, Paul, about A&M being the last "College" we've played (until the Wagner game). Its name change to Texas A&M Univeristy came in 1963.

Founded in 1851 as "Santa Clara College," that school was called "The University of Santa Clara" since 1912 ... and changed to "Santa Clara University" in 1985.

As you noted, we've since played the three major military academies and an institute: VMI in 1969 & 1970.

Note: Louisiana Polytechnic Institute became Louisiana Tech University in 1970 (We played them once as an institute (in 1965), then as a University a number of times since 2001.) And Southwestern Louisiana Institute (since 1921) became University of Southwestern Lousiana in 1960. (We played them in 83/88/89.)

The other former colleges that we've played had already changed their names to "university":

> Lamar State College of Technology (since 1949) became Lamar University in 1971. (We played them in 84/85/86/87.)

> Wake Forest College became Wake Forest University in 1967. (We played them in 89/90.)

> Sam Houston State Teachers College became Sam Houston State College in 1965 and then Sam Houston State University in 1969. (We played them most recently in 92/93.)

> San Jose State Teachers College (since 1921) became San Jose State College in 19365, California State University-San Jose in 1972 and San Jose Sate University in 1974. We started playing them in the WAC in 1998.

> Nicholls State College became Nicholls State University in 1970. (I don't choose to recall anything about our game with them.)

> Even Hardin-Simmons, which we played in 1953, had been a university since 1926 (Simmons University) and, since 1934, Hardin-Simmons U.

(NOTE: I breezed through the records tonight ... so I might have missed something. Please post or let me know of errors and corrections.)

Just what we need. Starting the year off with another trap game. Works just great if you stay focussed and win. It won't be like starting off with ATM or UT.
More halftime fodder - Wagner College accepts invitation to compete with the other colleges at Beer Bike.
This isn't a trap game. It's the first game of the year. The team will be focused. The score will probably be 28-0 at halftime.
Someone should keep an eye on the weather forecasts. Heavy rains would not be a good thing, if the past is prelude.

I think any game in which most people think you will win easily is a trap game.

To me, it would be a trap game if we were playing them on the road after winning a big, emotionally charged game the week before. This is the first game of the season. Both teams should have a lot of focus.
Was Nichols St. a trap game?

I was just posting this same question when I saw your post. We should not take anyone for granted.

Damn straight. Classic.

My personal definition of a trap game is a game that you should never lose, but could lose.

Sometimes losing the trap game is blamed on looking ahead. With all the focus this board has put on beating UT this year, and all the confidence in the general public that we should roll over Wagner, it is set up as a trap. maybe add some weather and some bad bounces, and it could happen. Odds against it are high, but that is why it is a trap.

Not to me. We played poorly and they played very well. I don't think we overlooked those guys.

Now that I think about it, it could be a trap game. We do play Texas the next week, but I'm pretty certain we won't overlook Wagner.

Your personal definition is out of sync with-- and differs from-- the widely accepted definition of trap game. Seriously, the definition of a trap game is not open to debate. It's a game that you're heavily favored to win, but follows an emotional win, and preceeds a highly anticipated rivalry game (or a game with major post-season implications). Consequently, the first game of a season cannot possibly be a trap game.
Walt... I don't think it's that black and white...
