This is a great article on ASN and C-USA by Harry Minium of the Virginian-Pilot. It gives some needed insight on the conference's relationship with this fledgling, but exploding network.

They just need to make sure they get more games on the main channels rather than the .2, .3, etc channels.

Their production quality is great. I look forward to growing the relationship with them.

But we have to have reruns of Big Bang Theory on Saturday afternoons!
I had no idea that ASN had put their headquarters in WPB. It would be amazing if ASN could become THE network for the G5 confrences. Going 24/7 will require a lot of content for sure. Ambitious plans.
It was widely rumored last year that C-USA was paying ASN for the coverage. I'm glad to see that it isn't costing C-USA anything. I would hope ASN will pay a small rights fee in the next contract.

It would be nice, but the coverage (for free) is the highest priority from my perspective. Imagine how bad it would be without ASN. 45 games on Fox 1 for the whole conference would be atrocious. I get three different Sinclair stations at my place, so almost every CUSA game they broadcast was on at least one station.
I live just a little over 100 miles from Miami and can't get ASN. If they aren't paying our conference any money, they are as worthless to me as a one-legged man in an ass kicking contest.

WXCW and WNFM in Ft. Myers are CW (CBS and Warner Bros.) and MyNetworkTV (Fox Entertainment/21st Century Fox) ASN affiliates, resp. Now if these local affiliates choose not to run C-USA football for an always enthralling epsisode of 'In the Heat of the Night' or 'Murder She Wrote', there's not much we can do about that.

I think it's great that ASN/Sinclair are running C-USA games because for those with only basic cable there's going to be a football game as their flipping through the channels.

Do you have DirecTV? I have DirecTV and added the Sports Package to my account. That allowed me to watch pretty much every single C-USA game that was televised last season. There were a handful of games that I had to stream off of ASN's website, but the majority were available in HD on DTV.

That's the big issue. Even Marshall's C-USA hoops tournament game was relegated to the .2 channel here in Charleston/Huntington.
Its too bad that Sinclair doesn't have that many stations in the western US. The MW could would sign up with them instead of Root for the 3rd tier games.
I feel a little vindicated know that people will watch G5 football over the air when the change is given. The number from LV says it all.
Congrats CUSA.

If they plan to go 24/7 sports, it will more than likely be .2 or .3. If they are consistent with it then everyone will know where to find the games. Last season it was all over the place, last minute decisions on channels etc.

Consistency will be key for ASN to be taken seriously moving forward.
Interested in the effort to make it an actual network on satellite/cable. Interesting model to make a network while still syndicating games locally. It could definitely work.

Interesting to see if they pull in another D1 football league.
You guys are missing the bigger point here. The value that ASN brings to the table is the saturation with where and how many stations they own. Whether they are on a .2 or .3 station is irrelevant to the long term.

Even with only a few months you saw ASN pull together high quality HD streaming. Sinclair isn't just haphazardly jumping into this. Even though they didn't give themselves at lot of time to get kicked off last year the future of TV is online and ASN is already building that into their model just like Netflix did when they first shipped DVD's around until they could get a lot more content available online.

But the fact that Sinclair and ASN have local/regional footprints all over the country will allow them to cater both their broadcast and their online advertising to local establishments while also pulling in larger national ad buyers that they can display all over their platforms. They are creating a best of both worlds that only ESPN and Fox can currently pull off. CBS can't do it and NBC can't do it.

The only question is how long is it going to take them to be profitable? That's the problem for us. They need more time to build the balance sheet. Assume Fox gives us $10 to 12 million for a true first tier rights and then can ASN at the early juncture contribute anything financially? I'm guessing about $150K per school is going to be the max they would be able to deliver to buy in. That could potentially get us back to a $14 million annual TV contract.

Also, one of the things I'm hearing could be possible is that ESPN could purchase some of our rights and then sub them to ASN. Though I'm just not sure how much I believe that's likely.

Our TV sucks in comparison to anyone elses. If rsther have ESPN and have true primetime TV occasionally and easily have ESPN 3 for every single game there is. No wondering what channel or sub channel to turn to. Hey guys, we are on channel 4.2 tonight.... that sucks to deal with.

Again, most of the games are going to go online no different than ESPN3 except I actually found ASN broadcasts better than ESPN3. ESPN's version constantly goes in and out between poor to good quality and their announcers are terrible. All they do is talk about Alabama and Ohio State the whole game.
I worry about C-USA's choice to leave the Dallas studios of Fox Sports and head to the ASN studios. Is this a sign of how our negotiations are going?

For the most part I like the ASN, but we need to make money too. They cannot become our primary media deal.

Fox had an area set up at Media Day as well. The Fox Regional host Ron Thulin also hosted the interviews for ASN.
I live in Columbus GA. Did not have access to any ASN games unless they were streaming, which it seems that they did not stream the ones I wanted. If they would stream more, I would be happy.

Well maybe that is changing. The article says:

Quote:When it was formed last summer, ASN reached about 40 million homes. ASN has since reached agreements to distribute its broadcasts to regional cable networks that will make it available in 94 million of the nation’s 113 million TV homes, according to Doron Gorshein, the chief operating officer of Sinclair Broadcast Group who runs ASN.

That tells me we should see the games available in considerably more areas than we did last year. Doesn't seem like the over the air distribution will be different, but for those that have cable, there should be a lot more availability this season.
