During the off season the S&C coach likes to have a event for all the guys to let off some steam. It started last off season with this: https://vimeo.com/101675995

Camp is right around the corner! I can't wait for the actual football talk to ramp up. Good luck and hoping for an injury free camp.

Good way to get some injuries during camp. One rep lifts without compression shorts or shirts is just an injury waiting to happen. Not sure what the hell the coach was doing behind those guys. Besides looking pretty darn creepy, there wouldn't be a thing he could do if they failed on the lift. The spotters would have had to take the weights - not an easy task in itself given the weight involved and the coach would be there for what - to hold their bowels in place..???

Can't believe the coach is their strength guy (by the way , I voted for creepy). Scary-bad scenario, there. Glad no one got hurt.

I bet every college football team does max outs multiple times a summer. Doesn't seem surprising at all.

And anyone who has every squatted knows that what that coach is doing is how you spot someone squatting. Of course he won't catch the guy if he falls, but if the guy lifting is like 75%+ there, he just needs to give a little extra boost to just get it in the rack.
I've done plenty of squats in my life and never had anyone spot me that way. The two guys on each side of the rack should be the ones doing the assist by lifting up slightly on the weights to help him rack it. Maxing out is not a good idea - it's just plain stupid. There is nothing good that could ever come from doing a max rep other than bragging rights. It's not worth it in the long run. Same with max bench pressing. It is incredibly hard on your shoulders, and because most will arch with it, they also end up with lower back problems.

That's why when they do the strongest man in the world competitions, it has nothing to do with just seeing who can lift the most weight.

If you google something like "how to properly spot for squatting", almost all the results/pictures/videos show that the proper way to spot is to be behind the person squatting. Some have spotters on the sides as well.

And I highly, highly, highly doubt the S&C coach at Arkansas doesn't know what he's doing. I bet if we check out UT's workouts, that is how they spot for squats, and that they most likely do max outs.

No offense, but I would trust professional S&C coaches, who most likely went to school for this, over you.
No nothing about the proper way to do squats, but those are some seriously strong dudes.

You'd be surprised who's carried a NSCA certification on this board. I wouldn't trust everybody that's out there as a Strength and Conditioning Coach. I personally never liked 1RM lifts and typically would test with 5RM because of the risk of injuries.

Does this make them better blockers or tacklers? Who the hell cares if they can do these squats.
SEC team with a bunch of large strong men, what a story...

I wish I could train with him... He seems qualified. And in regards to someone stating they have never been spotted that way it might be possible that you were being spotted incorrectly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MK23CuAfeuA
