So a few weeks back I was at the on campus bookstore and was looking to buy a replacement EMU flag. They had the ones with the "E" on them but none with the eagle head logo. When I asked I was told they would not be ordering any more of them as "The athletic department has dropped the eagle head and will only be using the "E" going forward" he went on to say that they "felt it was too cartoony".

While I agree with the latter, I was hoping they might replace it with something more modern or masculine in the spirit of the Phili or Seattle logos.

Has anyones else heard anything official about the Eagle logo going away.

(Don't misinterpret this. I am not asserting the mascot name is changing or swoop is going anywhere, just that old eagle head we are used to seeing...)
It will only be the block E and my understanding is that swoop will be gone as well.

Too bad - my kid loved Swoop. Still does
I've heard nothing of Swoop, but as of last year, the 'Eagle E' was well on it's way out. I believe that process started two years ago.

I don't like the Eagle E. I find the classic college script block E much more dignified.
Although, as late as this past season, the wrestling team still had the Eagle E on their uniform, despite the university dropping it as an official logo almost 24 months ago. Oops.
I agree, I prefer the E over the Eagle E but I still wish they would come up with a macho looking Eagle as well...
[attachment=7085]For instance, this one (see attachment) from the Hockey team is decent...maybe a variation on it?

My kids too! Hopefully they keep him .

The eagle E is silly. And the nickname of Eagle is lame and generic. I would like a return to Huron, but that will never happen. I would be ok with the EMU Emus as an alernative if they are thinking of a change.

I like the block E.

A block letter is hardly innovative or unique, but as we know from that school down the road, a single block letter CAN become a big, big favorite. If anyone tried to replace the block M with an animal (wolverine), be prepared for WWIII. UofM are the Wolverines but quite frankly UofM is the UofM or Michigan. "Wolverines" seems secondary? Someone more likely to say "Michigan" or "Maize and Blue" as Wolverines.

State uses the S. Central the C. Spartans seems more a central part of the MSU pride than Wolverines of the Michigan pride.

Don't know if I'm right about the above and folks may disagree (hard to definitively prove any of them).

Where the block E has drawbacks is out of state or beyond the Midwest. Go to NYC, Philly, D.C. etc or L.A., S.F., Seattle and ask them what school, "E", and you'll probably get blank stares.
For us:

Eastern Michigan, Eastern, green and white and LESS eagles?

We are not dropping 'Eagles' but I suspect we'll hear it less frequently and broadcasters will more often use: Eastern Michigan, Eastern or the green and white (and less Eagles).

I frequently speak: "Eastern will play Central..." or "Eastern Michigan will play Coppin State..." I never say "the Eagles will play..."

When we beat Michigan last December I was in New Orleans - watched the game with my "E" hat - two Penn State alums recognized the hat right away.

We all enjoyed that game with numerous beverages that night. 04-cheers

a cheers for New Orleans 04-cheers and one for that win. 04-cheers
I'm okay with the block E but want to keep Swoop as a mascot and also the eagle flying during the national anthem which is unique to EMU. To be in person and watch that is breathtaking.
I like the block E. It is a simple, classic look. It took a while to get a consensus on the style of E that Eastern was using. If you remember the previous turf at Rynearson, it had a totally different E in the middle of the field and on the scoreboard. That used to bug me! Everything should be the block E--that is our logo, our brand. It looks great.

The block E is about as generic as everything else we do marketing wise -- why change now?
the "E" just reminds me of Enron.

Haha or the top of an eye chart?

Wow, someone remembers Enron.

I suppose most EMU students are too young, too, though.
