If the only competition for an OCS is a similar older open air stadium like Legion Field or Ladd Stadium - and the resulting debt is manageable - an OCS makes a lot of sense. Mobile is not presently considering a third alternative - an MPF such as B'ham still wants to build.

B'ham NEEDS that MPF regardless of what UAB decides about an OCS to compete for hundreds of larger conventions, but UAB NEEDS so many other facilities first that an OCS debt may actually impair the financial health of its program if it comes before those other essential facilities. With UAB (AND USA) facing the same public school funding cuts since 2008 and extending into the foreseeable future (the state's SETF in 2016 is still a lot less than it was in 2007), the school must be very careful to build what it needs most to competitively play its games. Coach Clark has made his priorities listing clear on this issue, and the OCS is not at the top.
