Memphis had it blow up in their face, similar to La Tech earlier in the year.

Gary Parrish's take

Memphis's best player, Austin Nichols wanted out. Memphis went from denying the release to releasing him with restrictions as to which schools he could go to. When Nichols' family hired Donald Jackson of Montgomery to fight the restrictions, Memphis caved and removed all restrictions. Memphis has come out of this looking weak and petty. Jackson went public with this quote

""The restrictions are nothing more than a calculated effort to punish Austin's family for his desire to transfer. ... This is a calculated effort by a dysfunctional staff to punish a player for taking a step to remove himself from a failing program."

Meltdown in Memphis.

For the record, I agree with Parrish. As long as coaches and other students can leave a school and go anywhere they wish, no restrictions should be placed on athletes.
There should be no restrictions. As long as another school is not actively recruiting a kid thats on scholarship at another school there shouldnt be any issues with transfers even playing immediately.
Players should be allowed to transfer without restrictions. The only things a school stands to gain is not having to play against the player, and the receiving team probably not being privy to some of their tactics and strategy. The former shouldn't even matter, and the latter, a possibility sure, means that isn't the kind of player you want in the first place. Plus it's not like that stuff can't be deciphered in film anyway.

My thing about restrictions is the message they send are contrary to the player's interests. Not only that, but is the bad press and potential damage done to recruiting even worth it? If someone wants to transfer, I understand wanting to know why and wanting to get a chance to talk things out first but getting in someone's way isn't productive at all.

I don't know the particularities of what went down in Memphis, but the whole affair seems pretty sad.
I think it is very dangerous to put mandate no restrictions. It may create a revolving door. Most coaches have a buyout they would pay should they leave early, so there is a small penalty. I agree with no restrictions if there is a coaching change or if team gets in NCAA trouble at no fault of player. But other than that, I believe they should have to sit out a year.
It's a total travesty that Austin Nichols was their best player.

A lot of the big name schools (Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina, Kansas) are wanting him right now.

I was sensationalizing. From what I've seen of him I wouldn't think Gary would call him their best player. Who knows he may turn out to be the next Wiltjer. Yes, I totally just compared a white guy to another white guy. Guilty.
It is an example of how schools make administrative regulations that cannot be upheld when the player / student contests it in court. Memphis did not "cave due to weakness". It caved because its legal stance was untenable in a court of law. Schools at various levels have always made administrative rules about student behavior, grooming and dress that are in effect as long as not challenged legally.

Had Knox challenged the Bama administration in court on his transfer, he might have finished his career at Bartow Arena rather than in Carolina. UNC made a good fall back choice, and he saved the price of a lawyer.
White people cant jump.
He's what, the third player Pastner has had transfer out? Hot seat.

I guess you must be mistaking sensationalizing with "talking nonsense" because I don't think there's anybody that has even the slightest awareness of Memphis' roster that wouldn't call him their best player. Any players better than him had already left the program.

Yes. I was talking non sense. However, I was also comparing him to the great players of the last 10 year who have come out of Memphis. *If he's their best player than that truly shows you the state of the program.

*See: Rose, Evans, Barton, Jackson, CDR

Third?

Its been reported that since 2010, Pastner has recruited 14 four star players. Of those, ten have transferred out.

He would be gone already except he had a huge buyout and Memphis can't afford to buy him out.

Memphis basketball now flies commercial airlines and did not send cheerleaders and band to the conference tournament citing expenses.

This happens all the time.

I meant from the current team.
