Ryan wants his top assistant to get the job. Rumors have circulated for years that Tony Bennett would be in line for the job when Ryan retires. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

This is too big a jump. Wisconsin is a premier program. Kowalczyk won't have a chance.

next year he may be in the NCAA'S this year it is unlikely but the talent will be there just raw.
If Ryan coached 2 more years I think he would have been a lock for the job.

True, but it is NCAA appearances, not regular season championships, that generate interest thru national recognition and, even more importantly these days, the big $$$ payouts, and he is a bit short in that department. You usually need an NCAA appearance on your resume to generate the "escape velocity" necessary to leave the small time behind you and reach for the stars.
Obviously it is hard to score an NCAA invite when you play in a one bid conference such as the MAC, but that is the very reason why even one NCAA appearance by a MAC coach is often enough to get that fortunate coach's ticket punched for a change of venue to the "BIG TIME".

I agree. It is likely that our Coach K will move on at some point, but I don't think it will be to a top-20 program...more likely a struggling, mid-to-bottom Big 10 or Big 12 or Big East school where he will have a shot at a turnaround similar to what he's done/will hopefully do here.

That assumes he'll only have marginal success here. I'd like to think we could find ourselves consistently in the top 25, maybe even pre-season #1 and on the cover of Sports Illustrated, in the discussion or even in contention for a National Championship. It may not happen, but I don't ever want to rule out the possibility.

I laugh when people dismiss Coach K and think he"ll move vertically AGAIN for his next job. Can't believe Wisconsin would give the job to an assistant without at least a Mid major head coaching resume. Coach K should and will be selective in his next job, but being where he's from (Wisconsin/Chicago area) and what he's done at two mid major programs can't be dismissed even if he hasn't won a MAC championship Tournament or/and gone to an NCAA tourney. It's not his fault the league he coaches in doesn't get any respect by selection committees.
I laugh when people think Coach K has a chance next year to coach a team that has been to the last two final fours.

White is young, has SEC playing and coaching experience and comes from a very connected B-Ball family.
While I wish Coach K every kind of good fortune, results and future opportunity, I agree that a jump to a program like Wisky will only happen though a very successful visit to a mid-level power conference team or a formerly successful now on hard times.

It was enough for Groce at OU and Hurley at Buffalo, but not for Dambrot at Akron or Hawkins at WMU-----Maybe I should have said "sometimes enough" rather than"often enough"----although I am not really quite sure why Dambrot is still at Akron.
Dambrot is an Akron native and a graduate of the Akron but these days big bucks usually trump any team loyalty.
Ohio's coach, Saul Phillips, has spent 9yrs with Bo Ryan, 4 as a player at Wisconsin-Platteville, 2 as Asst Coach at Milwaukee, and 3 as Dir of Ops at Wisconsin. Saul also has two appearances and a win in the Tournament as a head coach. Bo's oldest son is an assistant at Ohio under Saul after being his asst at NDSU for 7 years.
I would say Saul definitely has the inside track over Coach K if Bo Ryan has any input in naming his successor, which it sounds like he does, and it looks like its going to his current assistant.
