Sonny Allen and Dave Twardzik are the two reasons I became ODU a basketball fan. Sonny's fast break was a thing if beauty. Can you imagine a ODU team averaging 98 points a game . Well they did!

Allen's system was thrilling to watch. I remember going to a couple games with my dad when I was a little kid. They would give out blue wooden blocks for fans to clap with. The decibel level was deafening.

Me too, 1st saw ODU play in my high school gym (we could go for free) when Twardzik was a Sophomore. I was hooked and when they moved into the Fieldhouse I followed and stayed a fan. Very exciting basketball and the team/program was clearly on the move up. 04-cheers
Wish I could have been around for that... I only graduated in 06 so I missed out on a lot of our history.

“No team we played during my years of coaching used the break more effectively against us than Sonny Allen’s team.”

– Former Indiana coach Bob Knight.

That is awesome.
Sonny Allen and Dave Twardzik are two of the main reasons I am an ODU fan to this day. The VCU rivalry doesn't approach the rivalry we had with Norfolk State in the early 70's. The West Virginia connection mentioned in the article was very cool as well. Skip Noble and Rick Nau are two of my all time favorites.
I too was thrilled to watch them play in the early 70's...one of several reasons that I chose to attend "The Old Dominion University". Sonny was an innovator and motivator...and had a nose for talent. He set us on a solid foundation and I wish him well with his health issues. Thanks, Sonny, for your many contributions to our University!
What a great article!!
I think we all agree Sonny was a great coach. I will add that the best thing that ever happened to Sonny was Wilson Washington.04-bow

Not a bad observation but Twardzik was the first Allen recruit to start drawing the crowds.. Also Joel Copeland was a big time catch. If he had not torn up his knee he could have been the best recruit Allen ever had.
