Is this really saying the ACC was too hard for MD to compete in, so they found a new league that was willing to pay them more money and is not as competative as their former league? As someone who is learning to like the ACC, what was with Maryland? From the outside it looks like MD should of had the same success in ACC that they are having in the BIG.
Any ideas?

The B1G does not take the non-revenue sports nearly as seriously as UNC/Duke/UVA/FSU/Clemson and now NCST do.

Maryland's last season in the ACC they fielded maybe their best ACC baseball team ever. And still lost to the NUMBER TEN SEED Georgia Tech. This conference doesn't play when it comes to baseball/soccer/lax ... hell even fencing/swimming/track.

And that's in keeping with what is the REAL goal of the ACC. We don't want to be another SEC ... football at any cost and to the exclusion of everything else. We want to be the Pac-12 of the East Coast .... hunting for titles in everything while keeping respectable academics.
The success of Maryland basketball is certainly no surprise to ACC fans.

Their football success last year was a bit of a surprise, but not all that much.

Wins we thought they'd win: JMU(W), USF(W), Indiana(W)
Games we thought were toss-ups: WVU(L), Syracuse(W), Iowa(W), Michigan(W), Rutgers(L)
Games we thought they'd lose: Ohio State(L), Wisconsin(L), Penn St(W), Michigan St(L)

So really, the surprises were:
1) that Michigan was so bad they were an even match for Maryland
2) that Maryland went to "Happy Valley" and beat Penn State

BOTTOM LINE: The Big Ten is just not some super powerhouse football conference. All of the teams are beatable - I know, I'm a Hokies fan.

What would make you think that Maryland has had more success in the Big Ten than they had in the ACC? They have only played a single season so far. And why would we expect that one of those two leagues is substantially easier or harder than the other? When it comes to the P5, they are basically ranked #4 and #4A in football strength.
Yeah the idea that MD has done anything noteworthy at all in 1 season is laughable. They had an average football team and I guess their hoops team was good, certainly not elite.

The fact that the Big Ten is weak doesn't detract from Maryland... IMO, this is a case of one team switching actually improved BOTH conferences!
Because the B1G is an inferior conference to the ACC.

Don't tell that to Ohio State and Michigan.04-cheers
Their basketball has returned to its usual level, while their football team remained the same.

What am I msising?

Everyone assumed Maryland would struggle because the Big Ten was "so much stronger" than the ACC. THEY MISSED IT, not you.

I guess my question to everyone is, is it BIG hype that makes it seem that it was a successful year for MD or was their product superior to the competition. I think MD athlete's are better all-round than most of the BIG (except for OSU and UW, even with PSU, MSU, & UM). In saying all that, I feel that if they were still in the ACC it would be just another mediocre year for MD.
As for football strenght, ACC football is not as bad as people think. Tied for 3rd with the PAC12. PAC12 football is over hyped!

This is all very true, Louisville has a big budget and has invested a lot in the Oly sports and pretty much won most things their one year in the Murcain, won more than anyone else in the Big East... but seemed to place 4-5 in many of the sports in this first year in the ACC.

For the record that's pretty much what I thought would happen coming into it, but it just goes to show what a step-up in comp. it is!

My obsession with the ACC? Nice bit of projection there. You really should just be laughing at yourself for being such a hypocrite.

Aren't you the guy that thought the ACC has won the Big Ten vs ACC challenge recently? Get a clue, don't just spout ignorance around everywhere.

Wrong. You are stirring an empty pot, is that symbolic of your head?
Urban Meyer is 38-3 as HC at Ohio State. He is 25-1 against the Big 10. He's 0-2 against the ACC.

That's pretty good. You had to dig pretty deep for that. They would have had a chance to rectify that ink blot on their resume but your returning champions team ended up 0-1 in the first ever College Football Playoff.
