WOW!! A school which comes up with a succession plan for its basketball coach - how novel! Props to the 'Cuse for thinking ahead.

Yup--rumors have been swirling for months now. I expect it to be officially announced when they unveil the new practice facility.

Agreed, it's a great idea. Purdue did the same thing when it became obvious that Purdue was not going to extend Gene Keady's contract. They ended up with Matt Painter, who set on the bench Keady's last year, which I thought was a mistake, but boy was I wrong. He's doing an outstanding job at rebuilding Purdue basketball!

Somehow I don't think Hopkins will have to rebuild

Are SU fans happy about the next coach? Anytime I see a longtime assistant taking over for a big time HC I think of the struggles of Bill Guthridge at UNC or Craig Esherek at G-Town

Boy, I certainly hope that Cuse doesnt struggle anymore than they have the past 2 seasons. Mike Hopkins is a great recruiter as well as a boeheim disciple. he has played in Boeheims' system, so at worst I think he may tweak the system a little, and hopefully for the better, but still keep things basically the way they are.

Guthridge was a great coach he didn't struggle, he just made horrible recruiting decisions that sunk the program Neil Fingleton over Omar Cook. BTW, he retired and it wasn't forced.

Guthridge was the former UNC coach who was succeeded by Williams right? Wasnt it Guthridge's recruits that Roy Williams won a national championship with?

No that was Coach Doh's recruits IIRC
Bottomline: history suggests you rarely exceed a legend in winning %--we just need Hops to keep the ship sailing close to current levels for a few years until he establishes his identity. On JB knows when he retires...3 years, 6 years, 10 years?
Hilarious talk on the Hoya Board about it--this is good for the Big East--we need our rivalries to bloom again like SU/GT http://hoyatalk2.proboards48.com/index.c...1179256758

That is some good stuff. Glad to see that they have a healthy hate for the Cuse again, now that they are good again. Well, maybe I can start hating them again rather than feeling sorry for them, like the last few years. ;-)
Just kidding, I dont hate any BE school.
