Damn good work, as usual. Thank you, John, for your excellent and well-spoken advocacy.
I challenge folks to read that with "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" playing softly in the background and try not to get chills...
Excellent!
One of Knox's main points can't be underscored enough: the city (and by and large, those entrusted to run UAB) don't understand the university's value and impact. When you hear more about UAB the further you go from it, that's a problem. However, I believe the #freeuab movement has once and for all united Birmingham's interests with UAB's. And that won't end if FRW kills the programs again tomorrow.
Don't be shy about linking to that article. It needs exposure, because he is right on the nose with it.
What a great read. I recommend it to everyone.
For all of the 20th century, Birmingham was seen by most around this state as "the city the state would be better off without". It was not by accident that the state legislature repeatedly refused to reapportion itself every decade - as required by the Constitution of 1901 - to give Jeffco and B'ham its rightful representation. That relief, like all other relief against injustice in Alabama, came from the federal government, never Montgomery. Roy Moore is keeping Alabama's ways right to the bitter end.

After nearly 70 years of unconstitutional rule (the Alabama Constitution of 1901), the federal courts ruled in Reynolds v Simms(1964) that one of 35 Senators and 7 of 104 House members was illegal. Jeffco's representation was increased from 7 of 104 to 20 of 104 (+300%) and from 1 of 35 to 7 of 35 (+700%) . That is how far out of legality Alabama's government was operating until 1970 (the year after UAB was founded).

One could rightly ask why there are THREE separate state universities in Montgomery and TWO in Huntsville while the only one in its largest city must fight just to exist as a comprehensive school? Apparently USA escaped the UA BOT's controls just in time.
