I know print media is dying, but I've always enjoyed the Daily Press coverage. Good luck to Dave Fairbank as he moves on (to retirement I think?), and thanks to him for covering the Tribe.
This is not good news for Tribe Athletics. Fairbanks has been covering Tribe sports for years. I wonder if Dave will be replaced at the Daily Press, and if so whether the replacement can fill Dave's shoes in his coverage of Tribe sport teams.
Yeah, I'm gonna miss Dave. The D-P should continue to cover Tribe athletics as long as they think it sells papers, but it probably won't be done as well.

As a person who fought the (very) tough fight of trying to get any coverage for W&M across the state, any way I could, I certainly appreciate those who actually did.

Hope Dave enjoys his new free time.
Good Luck to David in his new endeavors. Tribe sports fans will miss him and his fine body of work.

Going to veer slightly off-topic here to thank billymac for fighting the fight. I can imagine how hard it was, how many times you were called "crazy," and how many times you weren't thanked. But fighting tough battles seems to be the only way some things can get done.

So here's to you! 04-cheers
Will he come back on emeritus status when the Tribe finally makes the Dance?
Yeah, Dave and I come out of retirement together...just to say we were there... and get free food.

04-cheers
This is a loss for Tribe Athletics. Relationships with the local press are vital. Let's hope the DP will continue with this support. I have a lot of respect for D Teel.
I sent an email to Dave after reading this thread yesterday and received a quick response from him. What a great guy, will be missed.

Teel is a good sports writer but he has his hands full reporting on UVA and Va Tech, and the ACC.

I did the same and received a thoughtful response. Agree wholeheartedly.
For those who did not see the DP, here is a nice goodbye from Teel to Comrade Fairbanks.

I remember when I was still actively working the press lines, going to a sporting event and having ALL 3 DP writers covering the event (NCAA tourney, for example) be named Dave (Teel, Fairbanks, Johnson). All you had to say was "Hey, Dave..." and you knew someone would answer.
