Puzzled by that too.

Promedica has a serious case of land-lock at any sight I can think. New headquarters downtown has no expansion and as much as duh'blah wanted medical students around d-town, no place to put them. Toledo Hospital is already running out of "old neighborhood" to buy. Wildwood could buy out Kuhlman in a sweetheart deal and expand across Reynolds Rd but they'd have to re-do the re-do at Wildwood if they want to build a competitive school. Can't think of any other options.

MCO campus has tons of open space between it and S. Detroit that they are filling up with minor wasteful building projects and there is campus style housing all around. Why not there?

Anyhow, they should have found a way to merge with Cleveland Clinic long ago. That's the mega-gorilla in the room and it's heading this way as fast as they can build clinics.

Or some type of merger/buyout with St. Luke's now that Promedica has been to to told to divest. Promedica is the healthcare bully in the area. While it's true that the UT hospital was built too small, moving the medical school out of UTMC, along with the recently announced private rehab complex which will also suck physical therapy and other students off campus, will really hurt. Having medical students makes the medical center alive.

Wait till the State of Ohio starts to merge universities.
Quote:UTMC is providing about $35 million a year to the medical school to help cover costs -- money the hospital can no longer afford to transfer to the medical school

Quote:ProMedica will provide $250 million in capital to rebuild the College of Medicine

There ya go.
What the? Where did you guys get "College of Medicine to move" out of that article? It clearly states this is a proposed partnership. In fact, it has this quote:

“Our hospital is not merging with anybody. We are not merging. We’re not selling. We’re not closing the hospital,” Mr. Morlock said earlier during an interview with The Blade.

It makes sense in many ways that UT Med students would get to train at the biggest Health System in NW Ohio. Has the potential to be a big Win-Win for both parties.

Quote:Dr. Christopher Cooper, cardiologist and Senior Vice President for Clinical Affairs at UTMC, said ProMedica will provide $250 million in capital to rebuild the College of Medicine at a location to be mutually agreed upon at a later date.

Like athletics, hospitals will find it hard to survive and grow without a major infusion of dollars. This merger is good news.
People are seriously worried about where a future facility might be built? It's not like there's a shortage of cheap, available land in Toledo. I'm sure they'll easily be able to find a place. Heck, there are plenty of parcels available at land owned by the state/medical school on Research Drive adjacent to the medical school campus.
I wonder when The Blah will start calling it..."formerly known as Promedica"???.......

Well it isn't exactly a "merger," though, is it? At least, not yet.

It sounds to me like Promedica is going to gain huge influence, though. When Dr. Jacobs came on at UT, wasn't there real contention, and very little cooperation, between the Promedica and MUO groups?

1. They couldn't merge because UT is a state institution and Ohio owns the college of medicine. Promedica wants the gravitas of the affiliation with a medical school. They also want to do their best to hurt the Mercy hospitals.

2. There is a lot of bad information in the Blade stories, so we will have to wait and see how things shake out. One thing for sure is they want some control over UT's residency programs. Promedica only has a few, mostly in family medicine and sports medicine at Toledo Hospital while UT has 15 plus 9 fellowship programs and dentistry.

3. Nobody wanted to deal with Jacobs because he was such a jerk.

4, The new president will be in place before all of this is final. I have a felling she's a lot smarter that the UT board of trustees and will look out for our best interests.

1. Well, now-a-days, money seems to rule. Big business is often heartless.

3. I've no idea in what way he was a jerk. Jerks are not usually well liked. But, sometimes a "jerk" is just he kind of person you want on your side.

He & Ola, his wife, were always very friendly to me. Always a wave and smile or a handshake if he had time.

He was very kind to my daughter. She liked to run him down at games and chat him up and he always made time. Very nice the couple times I spoke to him.

Dr. Jacobs and his wife were always nice to me and my wife. No offense Terry cause I know you are a good guy but many times the person calling the other person a jerk is the one with the problem. that being said medical school affiliations and tie ups like this are happening all over the country. The folks at UTMC and the board of trustees are not going to do this if it isn't good for both parties. A deal in essence is when everyone gets most of what they want but not everything and both walk away feeling they both got a good deal and neither side one upped the other. I am confident that will be the case here as both boards have to vote so there will be given and take.
An interesting component of this "deal" - Any UT student covered under university health insurance, would have to go to Toledo Hospital, not UTMC, for any situation requiring hospital care.
