Wes Flanigan, Mark Adams, Brian Burg, and Ted Krass at DOBO.
REALLY pleased with our staff.
Looks good to me. I hope Coach Beard, along with Wes, can open up the pipeline to our local kids. At least the ones who can compete at the SBC level or higher. We don't need to be sending our good local players out of state.
Crass is Director of Player Development

Wes Flanigan is returning to UALR to serve as associate head coach for new UALR men's basketball Coach Chris Beard, the school announced Monday.
Flanigan, a Little Rock native who was an assistant at UALR in 2004-2008 and has also served as an assistant at Alabama-Birmingham, Nebraska and Mississippi State, will be joined by assistants Brian Burg and Mark Adams and director of player development Ted Crass.

What did that Wes Flannigan local pipeline produce when he was here before? Not a damn thing I know of. He couldn't even get the kid that played for his dad to keep his commitment here. He bolted to our instate rival ASU. And if he was that great a coach, how do you go from the penthouse(the big boys)to the outhouse as an assistant? Looks like he could have landed an assistant job at a better program.

Some here, are always wanting us to hire a local guy when we have any openings. Some wanted Flannigan hired as the head coach. Some wanted Joe Kleine or Darrel Walker? Some always want to move up some assistant, I guess because they become friends with them over the years. I wouldn't have had a problem if Kleine had been hired, but I really hoping for coach who had no connection to Little Rock. From what I've seen so far, I'm impressed with Coach Beard, but the proof will be in the pudding.

We should certainly see some good improvement within a couple of years, and if we haven't seen a big improvement within three years, the seat should be getting warm by then. That may be one reason I don't get real chummy with the coaches like some do. That way I don't have a real problem when their number is up.
I had some reservations about Wes as our head coach because he has no proven record as a head coach. He has served on some major conference staffs, and I'm sure, like most, has matured and improved his knowledge and contacts. I'm happy he's getting a chance here, and I think will be a nice addition to the staff. As someone mentioned earlier, he did recruit some pretty good players here. I can't recall all of them, but I remember John Fowler and Terrence Akins being mentioned.
He'll be fine. He was a fine player in college (Auburn) being named Defensive player of the year, and I think Scholar athlete of the year, so he's obviously a bright young man. As for the young man who went to ASU, he can't be blamed for what an 18 year old kid does. I think the girlfriend was at ASU, and girlfriends will sometimes trump a coach.

I don't have any idea how good of an assistant he is, but don't count on that LOCAL PIPELINE to take us to the penthouse, unless Coach Beard can get it flowing, because Wes didn't have it flowing on his last stint. But, that could have been because of Shields. Someone here has posted that the high school and AAU coaches weren't particulary fond of Steve.

I, like everybody else, was very fond of Steve. But I have heard those rumors too. If true, that might well have prevented Wes from getting some local guys. A little late to land any this year, but we'll see in the future.
It's a different time now, and a lot of the local kids everywhere not just here in Little Rock look forward to leaving home after high school. Just different times and different thinking for the kids and I have no problem with that. Get the best talent no matter where they are from, and when you win people will come. Local or not local. It's a new day gentleman.
Agreed. They could all come from Uzbekistan for all I care. As long as they are the best we can get. If some are local, fantastic, but I don't care where they come from.

I don't care all that much if we get a bunch of locals. When I was in High School the idea was to go away to college. I thought the international mix we had a few years back was kind of interesting and fun to follow. Bring on the Uzbeks.
