Quote:That was the disappointing part. We couldn’t get enough good players.

One thing that’s different now—when I was there, it was really a Tiger town, they played a really exciting style of play, that’s when Calipari was there, and it was hard to compete with Memphis State.

I told Chris Wallace yesterday, now the Tigers aren’t such a dominant team, you have more of a niche in the city. When at one time, it was such a Tiger town.

But I had a great time there. I wish we had won more.

Josh should be on the Grizzly's payroll, too.
Why? Wait until the Griz becomes a bottom feeder.
I know 3 people that are giving up their tiger tickets to buy grizz tickets next year

its the perfect storm....grizz on the upswing and generating excitement and the tigers are awful with a lousy outlook
We hate The Logo now?
Jerry West drafted bad players. That logic makes zero sense. So players are willing to sign with the Grizzlies now because the Tigers are bad? Jerry West might be the most overrated GM in history and he only ended up with Kobe because he helped pressure Cal in not drafting Kobe, which would have changed the history of the NBA and of Memphis basketball forever

Going a wee bit overboard... aren't we?

No, not now.

The hate started when he got here and started making bone-headed decisions.

nope, we are another lousy season away from becoming irrelevant

It's cool. The bar is now just making the tourney.

Irrelevant and awful are two different things. Belmont is far from awful, in fact, they are good... but, are the relevant? And, Memphis was 18-14 last season, not great, but does that make them awful? Mediocre maybe, but awful? No, Missouri was awful.

Gee, can't wait!! What an excellent attitude and sense of civic pride.

The local major league team has entrenched itself with this city and vice versa. All the young folks who are Grizz fans will remain that way. That's what PRO sports teams mean to cities. I like them both equally, which is possible.

It must be uncomfortable to see and read all the Grizz stuff in the media and around the city. Awwwww.
I just bandwagon on whichever of the 2 teams is doing best. It's a pretty sweet gig unless they're both having down years.

Let's see ...

Hired Hubie who was the 2004 NBA COY. West also won executive of the year in 04.
He contructed a team that made the playoffs 3 straight years.
Smart enough to trade for Pau Gasol - rookie of the year, Memphis' first All-Star & the reason we now have Marc Gasol.
Drafted 4 rookies who made the 1st Team All-Rookie list (Battier, Gooden, Gasol & Gay - via trade)
Drafted Kyle Lowery

Responsible for Showtime Lakers, the re-build after, and the Shaq/Kobe combo. Even if he (and Sonny V) did force the Kobe-Divac deal - that's part of the job. He got it done and he got rings out of it.

The ignorance on this board is mind blowing.

Not being combative, but West wasn't here in year one. Billy Knight was the GM and was responsible for the year one drafting (Gasol and Battier).
How many crystal balls are there out there in the hands of our message board posters anyway?
HLT predicted it a long time ago. I hated to agree with him, but I did.

When most of us were growing up we wanted to be Finch, Lee, Hardaway or Rose.

Kids growing up in Memphis today want to be Gasol, Conley, Allen or Randolph.

Most little kids in this town don't give a flip about the Tigers.

You're right ... I was under the impression that those guys came in 2002. My mistake, but even so ... his resume speaks for itself. Both with MEM and LAL. Can't say he is "one of the most overrared GMs of all time" .

Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

You disappoint me. With your vivid imagination, I should think it would be 8,9 or 10.
Hoping that our NBA team continues to be successful...it is fun.

And hoping the Tigers bounce back from a mediocre season last year...just like in 2005 when college attendance bottomed out but the team bounced back and attendance did too, it is likely the same will happen. The reason there was less NBA attention then was the Grizzlies were new to Memphis, and were awful.

Right now, and this speaks volumes of the tough history of the NBA team, the Grizzzlies are the strongest they have ever been, even if strongest ever means one conference final in a five year playoff run.

It is apples and oranges, except on a Memphis message board, where many want to use the success of anything to take a potshot at OUR university.
