A slab of fish is an absolutely delicious meal. The problem is that the fish looks like it was poorly cooked and peas look completely foul.

It's a depressing meal when you add up all of the little issues.

I agree. It's not that hard. Takes about 5 minutes to pack a healthy lunch for your kid and probably cost about the same as a school lunch.

It's more expensive - or at least I would make it that way.

With that said, I think the kid is worth the extra time and money that you put into it.

Those are peas? I thought they were canned corn.
Either way the lunch is gross. No kid would eat that. It may be low fat and low cal but doesn't even look very nutritious as far as fulfilling the Recommended Daily Nutrition Requirements.

That's what we do, for both our kids. Winds up being cheaper over the course of an entire school year when compared to paying our kids full school lunch fare and paying for all the free lunches for other kids.

Didn't know about the Let's Move guidelines. But I feel like a turkey sandwich, a ziplock bag of baby carrots, and a banana would be a very healthy and inexpensive lunch for a kid.

Looks like canned corn to me. Agree. That was a disgusting lunch. The real issue is why are the schools expected to meet all the criteria for a lunch given that it's the parents responsibility to ensure that the child is eating healthy overall on a daily basis. In most cases I packed my own lunch when I went to middle and high school. When I did buy a school lunch, I knew that what I was going to eat was not going to be the best food out there. Given that there is a cost to ensuring that the food is meeting nutrition guidelines and also within budget, is it truly the end of the world to serve breaded fish and fries and a vegetable as the meal in lieu of that crap? One meal would actually be consumed while the other meal was probably thrown away in large quantities.

You know how many kids pay exactly 0 for that lovely lunch? Millions and millions. Breakfast too!

It's now the responsibility of our government schools to feed our kids as well, not the parents'. Wonder how long until we're clothing them too.

We received a note sent home detailing what had to be included in a lunch and what shouldn't be in a lunch. We were told if the lunches did not satisfy the requirements, the lunches would be taken and replaced with a cafeteria lunch and we would be charged for the cafeteria lunch. I made sure my kids' lunches contained the required items — a low fat entre (something like turkey on whole wheat), 2 servings of fruit or vegetable and a nutritious drink if they were not purchasing milk. They were allowed a nutritious treat (granola, hi fiber cookie, etc.) in their lunch. For the first couple of weeks there were a few kids whose lunches were taken. Once their parents followed the rules, it seemed like that was it.
