UAB-Kentucky 2016 Football Game
Does anyone know when the contract was signed for the UAB-Kentucky 2016 Football Game? I was wondering if the contract was signed after September 5, 2015 or earlier. UAB was to get $800,000 to visit Lexingon on September 3, 2016 and the game will be the season-opener and first ever meeting between the two schools. With this game UAB would have played every SEC team, but one.. uat

There was a $500,000 cancellation fee (unless it is by mutual consent.) Did UAB have to pay UK the cancellation fee?

Why was a contract signed, with a $500,000 cancellation fee, knowning that the football program was going to be shut down?

Is this not fraud, waste and abuse of school and tax payer money?

Just thought I would raise the question.

You mean Sept 2014. You can check the football archives on UABsports.com to see when the contract was agreed upon.
A good question since we had other money games on our schedule for 2015 as well as later seasons. If UAB has to pay such "cancelation fees" to several schools, it may add to the embarrassment of Watts who said he was saving the athletic program lots of money.
I find it funny that uabsports.com still has a "Football" tab in the Sports drop down tab.
Man, I know it doesn't have anything to do with it but this makes me sick over the Tennessee game all over again.

It's the same feeling that comes back every time I see something about college football now.

Maybe they are keeping it "just in case".
Appears to have been announced on 1 October 2014:

So they schedule a 2016 game after they knew that it was shutting down.

That was the date (Oct 1, 2014) I saw too. So why flush $500,000 down the toilet... Is this Ray's way to "Save" money? Or did someone get a "kick back". Just does not make sense or maybe I am over thinking
It tells me Mackin didn't think the program would be shut down... or that Mackin was trying to throw up a road block to shutting down the program... or that our admin were careless.

The latter case. I think Mackin thought he could change minds/save the fb program but in the end it wouldn't have mattered if we got in & won the NC game. Watts & Co had already decided the end regardless
Yeah, I think Mackin was playing his cards tight right till the end, hoping that Clark could turn it around. He did, but the long knives were out long before.

If your assessment is correct, Mackin's fault was that he misunderstood the situation. The more successful UAB football became, the more strident the BOT's discomfort with it became.

Throughout its history, the times when the BOT was most active against it was whenever there was a move in a positive direction beginning with the Joe Fine "Black Friday" attack the day before two UAB players were taken in the first two rounds of the NFL draft on Saturday.

After that came the coaching change interference, the OCS debacle, the new practice field turf veto, and the way the Carr report has been handled. This pattern of vendetta was evident to any who saw it as it was before Watts was even in charge. It just got worse when he became THEIR tool.

It was announced on October, doesn't mean it was signed then....
