"I kind of heard some things where people said I'm soft for coming out of those games," Kiel said. "Like why's he hurt? That wasn't a big hit. They just don't really understand. They don't know what's going on. But for me, I hate coming out of games. I hate it. So whenever I came out, I was more frustrated than they were."

In an effort to avoid injuries next season, Kiel looks considerably slimmer with more muscle. He has worked with the strength staff and the training staff to improve his core and his flexibility. He also plans to do a better job of avoiding hits from onrushing linebackers, even if that means sliding when he sees one bearing down on him.

But he says for the most part the injuries that he suffered last year were freak occurrences and not the result of devastating hits.

"Some of the hits weren't really big hits at all," Kiel said. "You think you're hurt because you got blown up, but for me, it was a guy who landed on me funny and something popped out. It was hard to pop back in with my ribs. I messed up my collarbone. It was a whole mess of things."

I love the writer Bill Koch has become since he left the Enqurier. I think it has been said before the last month or so but it looks like the issue may have been the Enquirer, not Bill.

As for Kiel, avoiding the hits is going to be key if he is going to stay upright. He is going to have to know when to throw the ball away, when to duck down to avoid a sack and to slide when running the ball (as opoposed to lowering his shoulder to plough through someone). I'd rather he be available the whole season as opposed to make a an extra few yards on an individual play.

To me he looked like potentially one of the best QBs in CFB last year...just needs more polish that should come with experience. It's quite a coup for a non-P5 program to land someone of his caliber.
He was good. Have no problem with him at all. Don't think he was a wuss or anything and really liked his moxie. He does need to take better care of himself out there.

I felt like the offense did him no favors. We rarely rolled him out or moved the pocket. He was an easy target knowing he was always going to be 3-5 steps in the middle of the pocket.

Agreed. Don't forget about the little QB counter up the middle we ran 5 times per game where our QB goes 1 on 1 with an unblocked linebacker...

This, Christ even after he had tender ribs they were running a read option from time to time. I get that it keeps the defense honest, but hte risk is not worth the reward. Let the kid sit in the pocket and pick teams apart and show off his NFL talent.
Gunner is a tough son-of-a-beech. I love his play. Can't wait for this fall.
Loved everything about Gunner although some of his Ints were definitely self inflicted. Get rid of those and he'll be popping up video game stats. Agree with all the sentiments of him taking care of himself on the field, blocking better for him when he stays in the pocket, and moving the pocket some (not full roll out) to slow down some of the pursuit. With the weapons on offense we have, should be a fun year.
Gunner Is going to be great with more consistancy. It often felt like he wouldn't do anything and then out of nowhere hed throw an amazing ball.

He's now paid to write stories for UC fans. Don't expect that from the Enquirer.

I remember a play late in the season where we let a DE or blitzer go unblocked and there was a free hit, which led to the TO that later in the play should have been a TO back to us but wasn't allowed. We have to scheme better as well. He should pick that up pre-snap and make necessary adjustments. What a potential year we may have with this QB and possibly riding a wave of conf. realignment news! 04-cheersCOGS
The first injury he suffered was at the end of the half on a Hail Mary when we had 5 blocking 3. Total fluke. I don't think he's soft, he was just unlucky. He's going to dominate this year.
Hey Gunner! For the upcoming season, study these real hard...

I was one of the bad guys that called out Kiel after the bowl game on this thread. Just constantly getting hurt and always seemed after a bad play. Hope I'm wrong. A great talent.

He did not get hurt (as far as we know) yes, but he could have. There were many instances when he ran and should have slid but instead put his shoulder into the tackler. That is the running back's job. I don't question Gunner's toughness but as our stud QB he needs to stay on the field and minimize the chance of injury. You can't always avoid a defensive player breaking through unblocked but you can slide when you take off running.
