Ole Miss with a monster comeback.

They're gonna be exhausted facing X.
If I'm not mistaken, one of the play-in teams has advanced at least one round the past few years, so I wouldn't discount whoever wins this game.
Throw it at the rim, it's going in!
This is fun.
Glad to see AK's squad move on. hope they take it to X
Great to see the coach we should have had move on over BYU

L.O.L.
That was a hell of a game.

Dayton vs. BSU has their work cut out for them to match that one.

What a joke. If you can't see the right choice was made, there's no point wasting time or energy on you. Good luck with that.

I was firmly in the Andy Kennedy camp in 2006. But, man... that was 9 years ago. And as much as I still like AK, he has only taken Ole Miss to the big dance twice while Mick has gotten us there 5 times.

It's hard to say what Andy Kennedy would have done at UC -- it's safe to say our recruiting wouldn't have suffered as much in the short term since there would have been more stability in the program. Of course, that's no fault of Mick's. I think Kennedy would have done just fine here and would probably still be our coach. But from what we know, I would say the right hire was made.

No sense in comparing what might have been vs. what is. I am plenty happy with Mick. at the time I wanted AK and if we went outside I wanted Greg Marshall. Success is always relative. Ole miss has the worst basketball facilities in the SEC and when you compare AK's run of consistency at that school to every coach that came before him him it looks more impressive. ole miss's even getting to .500 in sec play prior to AK's arrival was a rarity. they are there every year now. I think uc is a much higher ceiling basketball program than ole miss. I wouldn't trade coaches, but I think AK has accomplished a lot at that school.
Not me. No way no how. For a thousand reasons, many of which were notoriously on full display in the national news for months. He was a dickhead behind the scenes here. He was a dickhead publicly and unequivocally showed his ass in that lol arrest and civil suit. Leopard doesn't change its spots.
Talked to a couple former uc guys who played for AK prior to the shootout this year. They had some stuff to say on Ak / mick which I was told not to repeat, but it was clear they still like and respect AK. Take it for what it's worth but I think he gets trashed around here a little unnecessarily .
Kennedy quit on UC when he allowed Mohammed and White to not attend classes and subsequently be suspended for our NIT game. I know some are going to say the UC did Kennedy no favors either. But one is an employee and the other is the employer. Guess who wins that argument every time. Why would you want a coach who quits on his employer. A case could have been made at the time that Ole Miss pull their offer because of his behavior. An employee who quits at one school will definitely do it again.

Honestly, I'd always heard conjecture on this issue that went a lot of ways and when I got a chance to ask former players about it I did. I was surprised that they willingly talked about it and surprised by the answer they gave. They asked that I didn't go around repeating it, but I think at least defending some people's names it warranted. The former players I talked to before the shootout have a very different impression of what happened with that situation. Can't get into details, but I think there is a lot that isn't known about what went down. I do think quitting on the team is a completely false way to describe it.
The staff knew they were not gong to class since January and did not give a damn...that is one way to quit. There are other ways, too.
Exactly Rath. He knew, the staff knew, the players knew. And no one did anything.

As a coach you need to lead. Kennedy knew he wasn't going to get the job and quit caring. Sometimes that is human nature. But he should have risen above it and done the best that he could until he was asked to leave.

He chose to do nothing and it cost the university in many ways. We did not move on in the NIT. That cost us money as well as exposure. And Kennedy did nothing. All he cared about was himself. Not his employer. Not his players. And certainly not the University.

It's a little thing I like to call personal responsibility. Kennedy couldn't walk them to class and was a lame duck coach. The fact that he was able to hold it together (although Hicks probably deserves a lot of credit) was pretty damn impressive.

Hell, a lot of students (whether athletes or not) don't attend class and in most cases that doesn't directly impact your grade. That's not exactly a good thing, but it's true in my experiences at UC.

Is this thread going to turn into a discussion of how he refused to recruit next? 03-banghead

I'll defer to mark on how the players felt and perceived the situation to be as he's had direct contact with those that would actually know.
There was so much more going on between the Men's Basketball Program, UC Athletics Leadership and the University Administration at the time than most people know about. Everyone does know the whole Huggins thing was a debacle of epic proportions on all sides.

In the end AK got a HC job in his home state and has done well for having to recruit to Ole Miss. I'm happy to see him have success this year and I hope they beat XU. I wish him nothing but the best.

I'm glad Mick was willing to take on what was a toxic job after everything went down. If he hadn't I'm not sure who else would've. In Mick, UC got a coach who is coaching in his home town for his alma mater and has been able to bring the program back.

UC survived what was a self-imposed death penalty. For that I am grateful. It is best to leave sleeping dogs lie at this point. We are rehashing old news bringing back the sting and stink of that year for no real purpose.
