It's not gonna be pretty at all and temps expected to drop all day. Right now it is 36 in Birmingham. It has dropped 5 degrees since 5:30 am when I got to work.

Birmingham has been down to 34 degrees, but is now back up to 36. It's a major battle between a shallow cold air mass pushing southward and a relatively warm rain/melted snow falling into that shallow cold air mass. The freezing line has been slow to move southward since sunrise, but it is moving. Columbus, MS is now 27 with a strong north wind.

in Huntsville it's an abject mess. Don't forget to set your clocks forward this weekend for spring...assuming we have power.
Jefferson County didn't have school today & work shutting down at 10:30.
I'm really hoping the freeze line stays north of I20. I never want to spend the night at the office again.
Columbus is 27 while Tuscaloos is 37. Jasper is 34.

The precipitation band extending back over central Mississippi is fairly narrow, but the precipitation is still moving northeast toward BHM.

....whoops...Jasper just dropped to 32.

It won't get to 32 at BHM this morning. This afternoon ..... ?
I am hoping I-20 is the dividing line for all that messy weather, and it stays to the north of it. So far all we have had is rain.

EDIT - It's 4:30 and the sun peeked out a few minutes ago before the clouds covered it. So far, so good.
It doesn't look like anything other than rain South of Warrior or possibly Gardendale. Another disaster averted.
Weather Underground is a good source for detailed surface temperature observations.
& it appears the worst isn't here yet in Jefferson County. Temps are dropping.
I think we can say it has officially arrived. Downtown has sleet and it is currently 30 degrees. I'm in Homewood and it is windy with a rain/sleet/snow mix.
Here in Huntsville I currently have about .2 in of ice covering my driveway and the road out. I'm not going anywhere for a while.

There were three 18 wheelers involved as well as the autos. About three or four people sent to trauma care ERs.
