I feel even stronger that we need someone with head coaching experience to take over what I believe will be an experienced and talented squad. Downing might work. Felton, Barbee, Horn, etc. need to be looked at. We don't need an assistant coach who has never called a time-out.
Actually, Coach Steve Shields might be the one most likely to succeed with the players he has been grooming for several seasons. No need for players to learn a new system and adjust to a new coach.
Regardless, if we think we have a talented team coming back, then we need someone we know can coach them. If we think our talent is just average, or below, we might as well go with a young assistant and build this thing back from the bottom up. I don't know who makes that judgment, but I know it couldn't be me. I didn't even think Derek Fisher had NBA talent.
