Glossing over the hometown Bearcats for Columbus State

Quote:Urban Meyer, Ohio State Players To Take Part In Cincinnati Reds’ Opening Night Festivities

Andrew Holleran

Ohio State’s national championship celebration tour will make a stop in Cincinnati at the beginning of April, the city’s baseball team announced this afternoon.

Urban Meyer, along with some of his assistant coaches and players from the 2014 title team, will participate in the Reds’ Opening Night festivities on April 8.

Cincinnati opens its season against Pittsburgh on April 6 at 4:10, with the April 8th game set to begin at 7:10 p.m. E.T.

Who will get to throw out the first pitch, Meyer or Cardale Jones?

No suprise. I am pretty numb to it anymore. They play in the Big 10 and are the defending national champions. The majority of the city looks at us as nice feel good story, but we play in a mid-major conference.
Hope it snows and it's -20 windchill.

When we win a National Championship I am sure that TT will be invited.

No big deal here.

Yep. And I am not sure even half view UC as a nice feel good story. Back water conference hurts.

TT throwing out the first pitch moves the needle exactly zilch. It's the right marketing move bringing OSU in.

There is a UC night every year at a Reds game. Some UC coach throws out the first pitch and there is reduced prices for people who buy tixs through UC.
Yep. This year it a Wed. night game in mid June. Little different than opening day.

X has one, too. So does NKU.

Every local University should have a Reds night. There are a lot of Buckeye fans who are also Reds fans. They should have a UK night considering how many Reds fans there are in Kentucky.

I believe they do.

Cal and the boys were up here the last couple years being honored.
Not surprising. Our family has really downgraded our Reds support. Money is better spent at UC.

The UK thing is "Opening Night" which apparently is a thing but I don't recall ever having heard of it before now. But it's definitely not Opening Day.

I'd get Miami, Mt. St. Joe's, Cincinnati St. etc. too if they haven't already and I ran the Reds. Heck in this town, I'd have a night for each high school too if they don't already. I don't get the outrage or why some others see it as a big deal.

That sucks you feel that way, but I understand it. I will say the Reds are a first class operation and have always valued their fans more than any organization I've been a fan of. I'm just souring on MLB in general.
Can't really blame them. The Reds goes out of their way to involve local programs, whether they be at the high school or college level.

The Reds' fan base stretches over several states.

Exactly correct. A few years ago they had a baseball game between UC and Louisville at GABP.

The Reds are not a small market team. Attendance and payroll are in the upper half of MLB. Reds Country includes Kentucky, Southeast Indiana, and most of Ohio outside of the northern part of the state. That includes college fan bases of Cincinnati, Xavier, Miami U, NKU, Ohio State, Dayton, Wright State, Kentucky, Louisville, and few other MAC schools.

With minor league teams in Dayton and Louisville, the Reds are closer to being a regional team like a big state university football team. It make sense to include all aspects of their fan base and go after the Columbus market. More than any other "Cincinnati" team the Reds have regional appeal. The Bengals' fan base doesn't extend into Indiana or Central Ohio. UC's fan base tends be based in the Greater Cincinnati counties in Ohio, mixed in with alumni groups in the rest of Ohio and other major U.S cities
One of my good friend's lives in Charlotte, NC. When he moved there he was amazed that the local foxsports channel broadcasted Reds games (Charlotte was a Reds coverage area for foxsports). Reds have a very wide regional appeal.

Former @OhioStFootball WR/QB Braxton Miller will throw about ceremonial 1st pitch for #Reds-Rockies Monday night at GABP.
Darron Lee threw out the 1st pitch against the Rockies Wednesday. He could have been a tremendous baseball player had he stayed with it. I love the Reds. Even in rebuilding mode. They're devoted to their fans in so many ways.
I resent Walt Jocketty.

Terrible job representing Cincinnati tonight. Probably cost UC any hope of a Big XII invite. Disaster!

Nah. No one cares about the bottom feeders of the NL Central. Nice to see the Tribe sweep them this week.
