to continue as coach. His record was very good. He was one miracle shot away from taking the Trojans to the NCAA. He recruited some good players, including a very good guard named Myron Jackson from Hamburg, Arkansas. I don't know how much his being from Brooklyn had to do with his firing, but Mike Newell was a golden boy who fit the image we were looking for at the time. It created some great UALR basketball for a few years, but we just couldn't sustain it. Just think if we had been able to capitalize on our success and grow the program, say like a Gonzaga. Oh what might have been, but wasn't, and still isn't!03-banghead

Never saw a game when he was coach, but he did have a good record. Didn't seem to have much of a personality though as I remember. I really don't see what coming from Brooklyn had to do with him getting dismissed. Remember when you're talking about getting beat by miracle shots, that Wimp just missed out going to the dance by a miracle too.
Kestenbaums problem WAS an image problem. After games he and Forbes would go and drink beer at The Press box on Fairpark. He did not schmooze with social elite.

Maybe not, but those sure we're some great post game times at The Press Box!
I was not privy to those. Didn't become a regular until the Mike Newell era, and that was thanks to MJS. He sold me my first season ticket for $75. And we used to get sandwiches before the games at Barton. Those were neat times.

He chose to schmooze with the every day fan. It was great, although I only caught the tail end of Ron's tenure.
