LAFAYETTE – Melvin Smith, who joined the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football staff last month after serving the past two seasons at Auburn, was named as defensive coordinator in an announcement by head coach Mark Hudspeth on Thursday

Hudspeth also announced that Levorn Harbin, who spent the past two seasons as a defensive line analyst at Auburn, will join the staff and serve as the Ragin' Cajuns defensive line coach.

The promotion of Smith to defensive coordinator, the January addition of veteran defensive coordinator/head coach Mike Lucas, and the addition of Harbin will give Louisiana one of the most experienced defensive staffs in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).

"I'm extremely excited with the development of our defensive staff," Hudspeth said. "Our defensive staff right now has as much experience as most schools in the FBS. All of them have been successful and are going to be great coaches and mentors to our young men.
These are the two "Huge" hires we've been hearing about? A Former SEC position coach who was fired, and a DL analyst from the SEC that was fired as well?

Yeah, but now they're pissed. That's gotta count for something.
ok
If this is the big news, it's a big let down. None of this moves the meter for interest in your team for having some big name coach. 03-lmfao
Impressive that Melvin White can play corner for the Panthers and be our DC. When does he sleep??

Perhaps we should edit the thread title?
I assumed when you got Auburn's Co-DC, that he would be the DC. That would have been pretty impressive. How much input did he have in Auburn's defense? An interesting question as one would want his experience if he had significant input, but one would not want his results from 2014.

EDIT: A defensive ranking of 63rd really isn't all that bad. It's only bad if you considered Auburn a team that could challenge for a national title. Auburn finished in the 30's or 40's the season before. Having those numbers in the SEC should translate at least decent to the SBC. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
In his and every other DC that works opposite a hurry up offense. It is nearly impossible to have great defense numbers when your offense gives the ball back to the other team every 3 minutes. Even teams like Alabama had a drop in defense numbers when they switched to the hurry up this season.

Yes, but Auburn's defense went down significantly this season. That's the problem. It's not like they were not running the Hurry up offense last year...same offense, Top 40 defense. This year, they were in the bottom half of the country, and the entire defensive staff got fired.

To be fair, Alabama still finished 6th in the nation in scoring defense. Teams like Alabama and Oregon can run the hurry up and still play outstanding defense because of the sheer depth they have. You have to be three deep at nearly every position on defense to be effective with a hurry up offense.

Troy's offensive coordinator was the fastest in the country over his three years at Texas Tech. He will want to play that fast at Troy and I can tell you the defense will suffer until we get talent and depth. We have a great coach, but he can only do so much.
I'm wondering if the two ex-Auburn coaches will have to be paid at all by UL for the next couple of years. I think their contract from Auburn both run a couple more years at over $400K per year, and if they get jobs from other universities the Auburn amount gets reduced by how much the new job is paying them. If we're getting them for cheap, would that be more impressive? :-)

They werent fired... They just weren't retained... Muschamp was allowed to bring in his own guys, huge difference.
No, they were fired. It's completely the same thing.

No, they got a new boss who decided to bring in his own employees who know his scheme. There is no way with muschamps rep and expectations and pay, he would take someone's job, then demote the same person and keep him on staff. These coaches were in the national championship game 13 months ago... Where were your assistants? Squirrel huntin? Your DC just left to become a position coach at a G5... We are bringing SEC coordinators in as position coaches...Ok dude

Ummm...they had contracts and the new guy brought in other coaches so no spot for them. Come on man that's 'fired'. Absolutely the dumbest argument this week.

You are right, we hired 3 men who are totally incompetent who can't hold jobs and are constantly getting fired. We had 4 guys leave in the offseason. 1 went to NFL, 1 got a HC job, one was fired and the other was not retained. If a guy runs a 3-4 and you are a 4-3 guy you can not be retained because they are going in another direction. Not saying this is the greatest hires in the world or anything but a dude from a school who couldn't keep his DC from leaving to be a position coach at memphis shouldnt be talking sht about them. Again, they were coaching in the national championship 13 months ago... They can't be all that incompetent. They have coached at auburn, alabama, texas A$M, miss state and been apart of a lot of top SEC defenses.but hey together we rise right?

Ahh, the typical ULL response. Trying to drag down ULM at every turn. I'm going to get my username changed so that ULM doesn't come up every time I make a point, because what ULM is doing has ZERO to do with this discussion.

They had a job, then they didn't. They were fired. Yes they were in the national championship game, but the defense was not the reason for it ... hint, that's why they don't have that big SEC job you want to keep bragging about.

Wait, you're saying they got fired because of a 3-4 or 4-3?

NO
It doesn't matter how they became unemployeed, it's the fact that they were unemployeed. I would be impressed had you hired them away from Auburn after the NC game. Picking these guys up out of the unemployment line isn't impressive. You are in a league that has Coach Fran in it, he coached, Headcoach at that, at TCU, Alabama and Texas A&M, however, Texas St didn't hire him away from any of those schools, he was unemployeed looking for work. Same with these guys from Auburn, again, doesn't matter the circumstances that made them unemployeed, they were still unemployeed.
