We could go 2-3 in our last 5 and make the conference tourny. Crazier things have happened and teams end up in the big dance. I'm gonna keep my hope that this teams figues it out at the end of the season....
Looks like we have 4 teams battling it out for the 7 and 8 seeds in the tourney.

We (UALR) had a chance to really solidify are chances of getting to New Orleans. Up 2 late, our best free throw shooter missed the first of 2 shots (he did make the second) and then we fouled GaSou's best player putting up a prayer from behind the arc with 1.7 seconds left. Of course, he drained all 3 and we go on to lose 72-70 in OT. Been that kind of year for us. At least, the 3rd conference game we have lost in OT.
I would be ok with going 0-5 if it guarantees that Marlin would be let go. Sadly that won't happen, so I'll take 2-3.

I'm guessing the Jags will go 3-2 down the back stretch and end up 10-10. (Reg. season)
I really have no idea how it works in basketball, so here is a dumb question.

Do you make it to the "big dance" (How many team is that?) if you win your conference?

The winner of the conference tourny will go. The SBC will be a one bid league. The only way it'll ever be two is if someone dominates the conference and loses in the championship game (and thats still a maybe). Also no random surprises like Liberty last year help.
It has happened a time or two in Belt history that we sent two teams, but not very often.

68 teams make the NCAA tournament. Over half of those are "automatic" bids granted to the champion of each conference tournament. (Ivy League doesn't have a tourney, so their regular season champ gets the bid instead) The remaining 34 or so bids are "At large" bids that are selected by a committe. Usually the big conferences get those, but this is one of those years where a few mid majors might get them as well. SBC is a one bid league, no chance of anyone other than the tourney champ going.

The 4 lowest ranked Automatic Bids and the last 4 lowest ranked teams to get At Large Bids are seeded against each other (Automatic vs Automatic, At Large vs At Large etc) in a Tuesday and Wednesday round in Dayton, OH (The so called "First Four" The winners of each game earn a seed and move on to the 64 team bracket.

Its very likely if the SBC champ is one of the bottom few teams, we'll get sent to Dayton for the right to get murdered by Kentucky. A Georgia Southern, Georgia State, ULM, or even a UTA champ likely get somewhere between a 14 and 15 seed, and a matchup against a Top 15 or Top 20 team.
I love my Cajuns and would accept a conference tournament championship but I truly hope that one of the league leaders win the tournament they have put in the work. I'm not giving up on my team just don't think we deserve it and it may bring long back next year.

NMSU is the favorite to win the WAC tourney ( only because we're leading - nothing is granted ).
Lunardi puts NMSU as a 14, but our RPI is woeful ( and can't improve because the WAC RPI is so low ) and a number of bracketologists have NMSU as a play-in.

I'm thinking an NMSU-Sun Belt champ play in would be fun.
And not the worst thing in the world - close to 50-50 odds to get at least one win.
And could be the first 16 to beat a #1.
And when you do that, then you get a breather against the 8-9 winner!

FWIW,
CBS Sports NMSU as a play-in and GaSo as a 16.
This good site, has GaSt in as a 13 and NMSU as a 15.

I really don't want us to win it either. Bob Marlin has shown me enough over 5 years that he is not the right guy for our program. An 80-73 record over 5 years isn't good enough, especially considering 13 of those wins are against non D1 programs.

How many teams from the conference play in the conference tourny?

Everybody? Or is it based on conference record?

It's the top eight, though App can't go, because of Capel's mismanagement. The ninth place team will go in its stead, provided App remains in the top eight.
Top 8 and I like how the tournament is set up to reward regular season success. Only seeds 5-8 play in the first round, seeds 1-4 get byes, then only the round one winners and seeds 3 and 4 play in the quarterfinals. Seeds 1 and 2 get automatic byes to the semifinals.

I agree. If you must have a tournament, at least heavily reward the teams that do well in the regular season.
Status on Marlin's contract and buyout?

Used to think he was a good coach.
I was wrong.Time for him to go IMHO.

A school with the Cajuns tradition and support deserves better!

You and I have similar views on Marlin, but he is not getting canned this year, and probably not next. We need to win just to keep recruiting at a bare minimum.
