Some might be inclined to assume that NYC's connection to the ACC is through its recent northern additions, and through Duke (which some folks around here refer to the University of New Jersey at Durham). But while UNC has had notable players who were home grown (Phil Ford, Michael Jordan James Worthy et al) a lot of their reputation and tradition early on was earned thanks to a prolific pipeline to NYC.

Frank McGuire had a lot to do with that, recruiting the city heavily in response to Everett Case's success in mining Hoosier talent for NC State in the late 40's and early 50's. Even after he left (opening the pipeline to South Carolina as well), Carolina under Dean Smith continued to find recruiting jewels in the Big Apple. I suspect that a desire to stop that talent drain was a major motivation for the formation of the Big East.
