Kind of surprised this isn't up here already. (Or at least I didn't see it...)

Our Conference Commish on the conference:
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/co...-post.html

Have at it.
The most interesting quotes were:

Quote:“We just didn’t play the Power 5 schools, we played the best of them,” said Aresco.

and

Quote:But Aresco knows that this league can’t sit around on its laurels.

“We going to continue to build up the league and we have to win more of those games,” he said, adding, “I don’t believe in moral victories and our schools don’t believe in moral victories.”
The cfb committee language he used was interesting
*IF* this was intended by Aresco to provide REAL info on the state f the conference (which I doubt) --- it's the worst State of the Union address I've ever read. Four quotes and none of them move beyond the rah rah cliche --
Not getting the access bowl and probably not the second best G5 conference this year, he approached it as best he could, I believe.

Think about it. Marshall would come in third at best. Everyone else in CUSA wouldnt crack the top 5. Our top 6 all would be within at least 2 games of winning their division.
Sounds like he's raising a white flag.

"American people, our conference sucks"

FIFY
Whatever
What I love about Aresco when he talks is that I can't figure out if he is trying to convince the member schools and their fans or the rest of the world that this conference really is not terrible.
I think we need to fire him and hire somebody at half the salary. He isn't worth what he's paid to run this dumpster fire. Why spend the money when it's not necessary. Even a guy like Mike Slive couldn't do anything with this conference worth a darn so might as well hire some pup and pay him pittance. I could probably run the conference in my spare time and get the same results.

You can't be serious.
That didn't seem like a formal state of the conference address to me. Aresco is doing what he's always done, singing the praises of his conference. I think he hit the positives he could and called a spade a spade. We scheduled well, but need to win more. Our scheduling is favorable to the CFP. While the access bowl is the big prize there is still more to it than that. The AAC is still the best non entitled conference. Even with BSU claiming the access bowl. The MWC is the WAC is the Boise State play ground until proven otherwise. The AAC is acknowledged as the 6th best conference, to force the "power" issue we've got to win. That is on us, not Aresco.

I don't see the comments be referred to as "state of the conference" except in the initial post. It read as if it was more of a quick interview than a prepared state of the conference speech, but there's not enough info in the article to decipher the context.

That article was done 1/24 and didn't seem to stir up anything until yesterday.
The man has done a good job, he's sold the idea the AAC is the 6th conference in the pecking order, the evidence is by the very fact you have more and more sports broadcasters referring to it as such. The man has earned his money and hyped the conference. Now he can't go out there and win games that takes the teams in the conference to do that, but he winning as his game, which is being the commissioner of this conference and promoting it, which he has done a fine job of doing IMHO.
Aresco couldn't control whether or not his conference got the access bid. Everyone and their brother knew that Boise State was the biggest competition for that bid...and they had an easier path.

The TV contract has given more exposure to new conference members than they have ever seen before.

With Navy coming in (an annual bowl team), it provides for a clear conference champion and helps solidify things on the football side.

Hopefully there are 4 tourney teams on the basketball side...and they don't include Memphis and UConn, which bodes well for the long term health of the basketball side of this conference. We want a minimum of 4 every year to keep generating tourney credits for short term revenue. UConn women may be on their way to another national championship.

His biggest mistake so far is not having a place for Temple to go bowling.

6th conference in the pecking order is first place in the race for least irrelevance.

This. Very misleading thread title.
