I just got the e-mail a bit ago.

An information session will be held on campus this coming Thursday prior to the Marshall game. Sessions will also be hosted on the Mississippi Gulf Coast & Mobile, Alabama, on February 10th, and in Jackson on February 12th.

The e-mail notes that Populous was asked to address the possibility of transforming the coliseum into a "state-of-the-art, multi-purpose venue that could effectively serve or support the entertainment, convention, academic, assembly, and related interests of the Pine Belt region and State of Mississippi for decades to come." It also states these meetings are only to provide information on the facility plan presented by Populous and options for funding "will be fully explored during 2015 and will involve many stakeholders throughout the region." Sounds to me like we're going for a legit regional arena and are going to seek a fair amount of public funding.

Im sure we will seek funds from Lamar and Forrest county. The yurt is currently used by every school in both areas for graduations and other events. I also expect a major private gift or "naming rights" to be involved also.
A practice facility will also be included.
Good to know. I was hoping this would be presented as a funded fait accompli, but "whatever"!

I am certain we will all shite 'gold' ones....

I can remember the biatching about the convention center....

just build it and do it right.....that's all I ask for as a local....

Why a school with our limited budget hasn't already utilized that option with any facility has always perplexed me.

I was hoping so. Thanks for passing that info along.

unfortunately, we aren't sec, large metro area, or the birthplace of that nike guy.....

that's a tough sell now.....

I'm intrigued....

hell, even espenis took interest in our nuts.....

IMO, the underdog school that shows interest in achieving is the one that comes out on top....

and we used to whip VT like a biatch.....

Not being in the SEC or having ties to free swag are exactly why we should've long ago pursued such alternate revenue streams as naming rights. It doesn't have to be a Fortune 500 company paying $1+ million. C-Spire or whoever kicking us $200K a year would still be a significant uptick in our bank.

All this "The Rock," "The Greenhouse," "The Pete" stuff is cute and all, but scrap all that jazz and monetize it. We certainly wouldn't be the smallest program to ever have a business sponsor's name on a facility according to this list from 2011:

http://businessofcollegesports.com/2011/...nd-arenas/

It also makes a big difference if we do turn it into more of an all-around entertainment venue vs. just a basketball gym. When the name gets mentioned every time TicketMaster is promoting a concert, then the sponsor gets a lot more bang for their investment than if it's just a place for hoops and graduations.

I think we are on the verge of launching a large university wide capital campaign.

we preach the same....."should (have)" is the key word....

this university's marketing skills have been nonexistent over the years....

...been saying this since I was a tyke....people just laughed at me....

if I only could've developed a tennis shoe with a swoosh....

The problem is that we don't refer to it as the named stadium as is, right now (MM Roberts Stadium, Carlisle-Faulkner Field, Pete Taylor Park, etc.)

There are times when a stadium's nickname is still going to out-do the 'corporate' name (Does anyone call it the Mercedez-Benz Superdome yet?)

But do you ask for the sponsorships to be yearly? Or one time deals. I mean they get their names right now from one-time donations from alumni.

If not over about $14mil then why dont we do like La Tech did on their end zone project and convince the students to foot over half the bill.
I've seen the renderings, and it is absolutely awesome. First class all the way. It will be one of the best in the conference. Just have to find the funding. That's the easy part though, right? :-/

It doesn't matter if regular fans still just call it "The Superdome." What matters is every media report on every game played there says it took place in the "Mercedes-Benz Superdome" and "Mercedes-Benz Superdome" is printed on every ticket to every event in the building and at every entrance to the premises. It's a crapload of guaranteed, steady advertising.

The deals are usually set up like a lease. The sponsor commits to "x" dollars per year for "y" number of years.
