The Tuscaloosa campus is spending 4.4 million dollars on a state of the art rowing facility . Corrected, the rowing team is part of the Big 12 and is a scholarship sport, and has 55 ladies participating.

Fixed it
$4.4 Million!!! And they use the term fiscal responsibility?

This in a state that can't afford to expand Medicaid? Folks dying while we build multimillion dollar buildings for rowboats? Sick.

Is there a rowing club in any other schools in Alabama?
According to the Tuscaloosa NEWS article:
Women's rowing program is 8 years old and is getting a new (not renovated) 11,163 sq ft facility costing $4.4 million -- a boat storage building with an attached floating dock on the Warrior River. BOT approved it in Sept. 2012 and added $500,000 in Nov. 2014. To be finished by May of this year and funded by the "UA Intercollegiate Athletic Quasi-Endowment Funds".

My thinking is that this is just another example of the UA Athletic department inventing ways to spend as much of their hundreds of millions income as possible so it doesn't have to be turned over to the academic side -- perhaps to hold down tuition and other fees for regular students. That is why the UA (and AU) Athletic departments can spend $200,000 per athlete annually while the school's academic side raises tuition annually just to keep their head above water at about $13,000 per student.

USA used to have a yacht team as well as a school yacht to go w/ it - the president at the time used it for his retreats w/ the sweet young thing his wife didn't know about

I wonder how long it will be before they spend money on a hockey rink - currently they play at Pelham Ice

I predict they build a 2500 seat hockey facility and bill it as multi use.

And they will build it without annoying questions from Pinis St. John about how many days a year it will be used. Electric bill for the ice be damned.
4.4 mil isn't that much for them. Could've cost more. Of course, a waterfall probably is not a good idea for a rowing facility. 03-lmfao

Back when the BJCC was new, I toured it and the guide said that the ice was kept in place all year (B'ham had the BULLS hockey team then) and it was only removed for the annual return of the circus - so they could get to the tie-down points mounted in the concrete floor. For other uses, there was a floor laid on top of the ice with insulation in between. That included the basketball floor that UAB used back then.
Huntsville gave the VBC a pretty good facelift 2 years ago. The VBC can drain off the ice in 8 hours, have an event, and then get ice back ready to play in 20 hours. But they don't even try for that fast of a turn around , and put insulated boards on top of the ice, in the manner you suggested.
I don't care about what UA has. Good for them. I care about what BOT takes away from us. We need our own independence to do whatever we want.
Double dealing...double standards. Leave it to the Board of Trustees to spend as much as they please for the benefit of U of A and leave UAB high and dry. It has been going on for years. For every million dollars they spend on UAB, they spend ten million dollars on U of A. It's their prerogative.
Row Tide!

Women's rowing is a scholarship sport at Alabama. It is not a club sport. That, and bowling are two cost effective (ie; cheap) sports that create women's scholarships to comply with Title IX.

The facility is being paid for with Athletic Department funds, which, like it or not is possible when you have a very profitable and financially supported football program. The Athletic Endowment Fund at U of A has over $75MM in free cash. Most of this has been generated by the Football Program (2014 profit: $53MM). That's profit, not revenue.

This is not coming out of student fees, or other tax or student dollars. It's hard to make an argument that there is a double standard here, when it is paid for with internally generated funds.
"Among the goals of the facility is to increase the visibility of the program and serve as a recruiting draw, according to information presented to the trustees."

The same went for UABs on campus stadium.

HELLO?

Double standard....double dealing.

That's correct, but again, this is paid for with internally generated funds. I am not saying the BOT made the correct decision with the OCS (in fact, I don't think they did) but it is not a double standard or double dealing when then money for this does not come out of the University Budget.

An egregious example of double dealing, however, was the BOT refusing to allow for the practice field which was also not coming out of the University budget. That was double dealing of the highest order. But this is not.
I don't give a tinker's damn what they spend their money on. What pisses me off is how they have the autonomy to spend it how they please, and UAB and UAH don't have it to spend their own money how they please.
