Dear UAB National Alumni Society Board,

UAB supporters were watching social media late last night, waiting to hear the outcome of your private meeting. When we heard the announcement that you had “no confidence in Ray Watts up until Jan. 9th” I was so disappointed and angry that I wanted to scream. Do you not realize that the only reason Ray Watts caved in and allowed for a “second opinion” of the Carr report was to save his job? Ray Watts DOES NOT want UAB to have a football program! Ray Watts showed NO compassion for the UAB football players and coaches, not to mention the bowling and rifle teams that were informed of the decision by E-MAIL!

UAB football had its best season in 10 years and attendance DOUBLED! UAB football was headed in the right direction and would have been heading to a bowl game if Ray Watts had not chosen to shut down the program before waiting to find out if UAB would be invited to a bowl game. The fact that UAB football was terminated eliminated ANY possibility of being invited to a bowl game. So, instead of having a chance to play in a bowl game, UAB football players and coaches received the soul-crushing news that UAB football had been shut down and that all of their efforts in 2014 meant NOTHING to Ray Watts.

Also, Ray Watts has already show that he DOES NOT care about shared governance. He didn’t even bother to stick around to hear what the alumni had to say at the meeting last night!

How can you work with Ray Watts and allow UAB football, bowling, and rifle to remain shut down? Do you not realize the harm that is being done to UAB football with every day that passes without the program being reinstated? Why did you not do what the alumni asked you to do last night?

Please write back. I want to hear your response to this.

Regards,

Elliot Brindley

the president of the nas JUST 2 uat season tickets ,,,,,,box tickets
Here's what I sent to UABalumni@uab.edu , with copies, as requested to jbreland@uab.edu. I went and extra step and copied Wes Smith and Carles Collatt at the Mayer Electric emails.

-----------------------
Wes,

There is a lot of confusion and disappointment with the NAS Board after a showing of Membership's overwhelming support for a strengthening in the NAS positions of "No Confidence" & immediate restoral of the cut athletic programs towards the UAB Adminsitration.

Is there anything at all you can offer to explain why the statement last night retreats, rather than strengthens, the voice you and the Board most definitely saw last night?

The ridicule and disbelief is already coming back to the Membership, both publicly and in the media, that the UAB NAS is fractured and incongruent.

Those feelings are also spreading virally among the 3% of the Membership that was present last night.

We feel betrayed.
My reply:

This statement implies the 350 members in attendance began having confidence in Dr. Watts on January 2015. That is absolutely NOT the case. This statement does not call for the immediate restoration of the athletic programs unilateral dropped by Dr. Watts on December 2, 2014. This statement does not call for Alumni inclusion in decision making process. This statement does not call for a meeting of all stake holders in athletics to discuss steps required to restore the athletic programs and update facilities. Therefore this statement by the Board is a false statement to Dr. Watts and the public on what was discussed at the meeting and recommended to the Board by attending members.
I sent a email and blasted them myself.

first WHO is this wes guy
hOW he get there
he is the one who decide to remove the dragon from the uab tag ?
the statement last night was not A VOTE of no confidence
this guy need to be remove from the new review committee asap
Wes Smith is the president of Mayer Electric.

I suspect he worked his way up the NAS chain of command by brown nosing UAB administrators.

I believe Wes was involved in removing the dragon from the tags or at least helped in the effort.

I think Wes enjoys season tickets to Alabama football games.

I think he led the decision last night which went against what everyone believed.

I think the committee that he is on should not be considered a valid committee since it was created by an invalid president.
Who else is on the NAS board ?

The NAS had their hand forced and came back with an obtuse statement. We need to determine if we have any allies at the top of their "organization" .

WAKE up guys ....it is a UAB vs uat fight and right now we are losing ,,,,big times
Yea, we just cant publicly say it or we will lose our ally's. If we do lose this fight we will go the nuclear option. At that point they will know who the fight is between.

No idea on any of them except Wes who we now know about.
Let's do some W.A.G. math...
State population 4,800,000
Not interested in anything 1,000,000
Too young to care 1,000,000
SUBTOTAL 2,800,000
Loyal to out-of-state teams 250,000 (probably generous)
SUBTOTAL 2,550,000
Always pick Bama First Fans 1,200,000
Always pick Auburn First Fans 1,200,000
Always Pick Other AL First Fans 100,000 (probably generous)
Always Pick UAB First Fans 50,000 (probably generous)

Bama fans outnumber Blazer fans by 1,200,000 to 50,000 (that as 120:5 ratio) Fortunately there's probably only 20,000 or so Bammers that give a rip about anything UAB.

If we make it about UA vs UAB, WE WILL ALWAYS loss the War! Because instead of 20,000 Bammers to deal with (winnable battles), we've got 500,000 to 1,000,000 (many of them are passive too)!

Our battle is with the UA-BOT and it's allies. We need to pick our battles carefully. If we rattle the Bammer cages too much we'll loss any chance of getting legislative action passed for BOT reform! Keep in mind the legislators get their UA and AU tickets and the press get's it's sideline or press box access. Greased palms get things down - AND prevent getting things done - in Alabama.
I just got a reply from NAS on my replay to their statement!

Thank you for sharing your response with us. We are compiling the responses and will ensure that they are shared with the NAS Board of Directors.

UAB Alumni Office
Please take the responses, print them out, wad them into balls, & shove them up Wes' ass (figuratively speaking of course)

Oooooooo... Another threat of bodily harm.
Well, I can relate to your anger issues, mi amigo. It is hard to stomach the games being played by 1) the BoT, 2) watts, and now 3) smith. It makes those of us alumni that are 100% loyal to our university really feel that we aren't represented by ANYONE. I feel helpless, and for me, that feeling is turned into anger very easily- especially when you see an alumni association meeting that is hijacked by complete buffoonery of the elected leadership.
Quite simply, it is sickening...

Did you consider that all we have to do is not give up ?

This isn't a frontal assault against a fortified position.
Guys, I was sitting there. It looked to me very much like Wes Smith was happy to have Frank Messina included, and he said that he had already asked about it. Smith, Don Hire, and Messina seemed to be on good terms as best I could tell.
We knew about the BOT, we found out about Watts & Smith & Bolton.
No idea who else is involved.
Don't know if I can stand finding out which others are but they must all be removed.

That is the only way we can go forward from here.

Are you sure that it isn't some type of delay tactic from Smith?

Hard to find any daylight between Watts & Smith right now, they seemed to be attached at the hip.

Band Dad- You know I love you like a brother, so I'm just asking, not questioning your veracity:
How do you rectify the written statement with the general consensus of those in attendance? Am I dense here, or just plain missing something (granted it's very difficult when I'm OOT)?
