Just saw a tweet from Mark May. He said the biggest play that changed the season was the Offensive PI on ND in the FSU game...

Lets say that call gets overturned.

I doubt Notre Dame would have gone quite as much in the tank as they did. But not enough to make the sf... And given how little respect the committee had for FSU undefeated, tough to see them in the sf with 1 loss.

so final 4 then would have been
1 Alabama vs 4 Baylor
2 Oregon vs 3 Ohio St

Orange would have been FSU vs Miss St

access bowls would have had TCU, Mich St, Arizona, Ole Miss, Boise, and then 1 of Kansas St, Ga Tech, or Notre Dame.

Definitely the play that changed the season the most I think.

another one- hail mary that Arizona St got on USC. IF that doesn't happen- USC instead of Arizona goes to the P12 title game. Could USC have beaten Oregon? Probably would have been a better game for sure(almost anything would have).

any others that folks can think of?
Baylor kicked a FG on the last play of the game to beat TCU. It was a gimme FG, sure, but if the kicker derped it, the game would have gone to OT. If TCU goes undefeated, then of course the playoff has a different look to it.

good point...

going back to FSU- the thing you wonder with FSU- if they lose there vs ND- do they get out of their funk and play with passion the rest of the season, or does the funk get even worse, and they lose another game or two(or worse).

TCU could have just as easily lost at WVU on a missed last second FG instead of winning. A 2 loss TCU would have made Baylor the one true champion and then the playoff selection committee would have had a tougher decision.
There has been a lot of what if's on this and various threads.
Georgia decides to run Gurley 3 times with 1st and goal at the 4 down 3 in the closing minuates at South Carolina instead of passing and getting sacked for a 10 yard loss and later missing a short FG. If UGA wins that game they win the SEC East and I think they beat Alabama in the SEC ccg. That likely puts Ohio St. and Baylor in and Alabama & UGA out. You have Oregon-Baylor and FSU-Ohio St.

That changes a lot. Think the Georgia/Georgia Tech game has a whole lot different meaning then as well. A Georgia win there, and the SEC title game is for a playoff spot guaranteed for either team.
guess another one is the Ole Miss/Auburn game. If Treadwell had scored TD/not gotten hurt on the play. Ole Miss likely doesn't lose to Arkansas, and finishes 11-1- winning the division. Alabama finishes 11-1. Does Alabama make it in the playoff as a 2nd SEC team? Very possible I think.

True. I was assuming UGA still loses that game (only changing one game in this assumption). That makes GT look even better if UGA was 10-1 and sitting top 5.
Maybe even if Boise St beat Ole Miss, it changes the dynamic of some SEC teams.

I was thinking if KSU didn't inexplicably miss 3 FGs (kicker was 15/18 prior) and turn the ball over 3 times against Auburn to lose 20-14, it changes the polls a lot. But Alabama still probably ends up in the same place and Baylor & TCU probably still end up behind Ohio St. Ole Miss and Mississippi St. don't rise so high though.

Why do you assume that USC would have made for better competition than Arizona?

Do you really need to be reminded about who the one team was that actually beat Oregon during the season? USC wasn't all that great. Oregon would have romped them too. Oregon is just that much better this year than the rest of the conference. I think the team with the best chance against them at the end of the year would have definitely been UCLA.

Just hindsight- just the way Arizona played vs Oregon in the title game.

Yeah, I get it but we have to keep ourselves from using too much hindsight because hindsight doesn't come into play during the decisions when they are being made. The decisions being made are being made upon everything that is available.

What was available was that Arizona was a great opponent for Oregon in that Conference Championship. I thought then that UCLA would have been a better opponent but no doubt, Arizona deserved to be there and them being there made for a great storyline.
Who knows what may have unfolded if the ball bounced the other way a time or two in State College on 10/25.
