Bad accident between Galesburg and BC. Westbound lane is backed up well past BC. 1 fatality and one of the semi trucks involved was hauling fireworks and they were ignited.

That stretch of I-94 is the worst outside of Chicago, especially in Winter.

It needs to be three lanes in both directions.

I did a 360 there a few winters ago and hit the wall. Luckily just car damage no injuries.
My wife and i were saying the same thing. Has to be three lanes between Chi and Det. Too much traffic for the highway.

I've been in one of those situations where you're hoping the cars behind you see that traffic is stopped and don't run into you. And then you can't risk getting out of your car and running to the median or side of the road for safety because they might slide into you when you do that.

That accident is all over the national news.
Too much traffic, and inconsistent speeds is never a good recipe.

I guess MLive sees this massive accident as a huge business opportunity... Two giant sliders at the top of the page, and then 21 articles from 7 different reports, just for good measure. Geez.
It was on all of the major network news shows. Not often that a national story breaks locally so they're capitalizing on it.
Lake effect snow bands are the worst. The past few "mega pileups" in Michigan were in these. Sunny and dry one minute, zero visibility the next minute. And factor in the 'tuff guy' drivers who'll speed in any sort of weather, and there you go.
The biggest winter problems with the Galesburg area of I-94 are the drastic elevation change on the south edge of the highway and the river on the north side. Snow has always dumped on the highway there.

For about 20 years we lived near there and I avoided I-94 like the plague on snowy days. Early on I got caught out there once for hours and vowed never again.

This is the problem with our fan base. Always looking for the fastest, most efficient road to Climax.

ENJOY THE PROCESS! ROW THE BOAT!
When I was young I could get to Climax in about 11 seconds, clearly I was getting there too fast, but now it takes much longer to get there. My neighbor grew up in Climax. He and his wife still get to climax once and awhile, although not often enough according to her.
I can't believe more people weren't killed after seeing this video.

That is insane. It is incredibly dangerous to get out of your car, but what are you going to do?

I'd take my chances out of the car versus being the meat in a semi sandwich.
Another crazy video! This is just a few minutes after the first video, a guy walking up behind the wreck. Still can't believe more people didn't die in that wreck.

I'm assuming that first semi shown is the fatality but... "Oh I was just in a major accident and there are probably people who need help, better pull out my cell phone and record!" really bugs me.

I confirmed that it was not the fatality. A firefighter friend of mine showed me that video. He said the fatality was where the big fire was.

The pile-up covered both directions of traffic. The person recording was also a victim of the crash, and as it got worse he actually did put down the phone and cross the median to help (most news broadcasts stopped the video before that part though).

And the fatality was the third-to-last vehicle involved.
