Former Wake QB to enroll at UC

By Josh Katzowitz
Post staff reporter

The paperwork for his son's transfer to the University of Cincinnati, according to Mike Mauk, isn't completed quite yet and likely won't be for today's national signing day.

But the Kenton High school athletic director said Tuesday that Ben Mauk - a former quarterback at Wake Forest - plans to enroll in classes at UC sometime in May and wants to play football for the Bearcats.

"I know," Mike Mauk said Tuesday, "that's where he wants to go."

Mike Mauk said the reason he wants to play at UC is three-fold.

No. 1, academically, it's a good match for Ben Mauk, who will graduate this spring from Wake Forest with an education degree and wants to obtain a master's degree.

No. 2, a move to Cincinnati puts him closer to home.

No. 3, he wants to be part of Bearcats coach Brian Kelly's pass-happy offense.

"They're doing what they need to do to get him in school," Mike Mauk said. "Once that's taken care of, he's all set to take classes."

He's just not sure when the process will be completed.

"I've never been through this process," Mike Mauk said. "I don't know who's signed what or what hasn't been signed. (Ben Mauk) has been in contact with some of their coaches, and they're trying to get everything in order for the NCAA, the Big East and the University of Cincinnati. Once all that's been filled out - they're in the process right now - I'm sure there will be an announcement."

As a redshirt junior, Mauk was the starting quarterback for last year's Demon Deacons squad, but in the first game of the season against Syracuse, he dislocated his shoulder and broke his right arm and had to undergo two surgeries. His replacement, Riley Skinner, won the ACC rookie of the year award.

He also entered the 2005 season as the starter, but he lost the job after the fourth game. For his career, he's played in 18 games, starting 10, and he completed 54 percent of his passes for four touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

In high school at Kenton in northwest Ohio, the 6-foot-1, 200-pounder set national records for completions (1,105), attempts (1,931) and yards (17,534).
Jamaal Sheard, 3* DE chose Pitt over Rutgers today.
20 of UC's 22 recruits have sent in their LOI... only waiting on two (one of them is on the west coast, so no big deal). Tom Lemming says this is probably UC's best class ever, FWIW. As I've said before, I'm not sold on all the "ratings", as somehow UC has competed pretty well over the last decade without having any highly rated classes.
3 Star LB/DE Patrick Grant picked Louisville over Iowa, Nebraksa-(His original commitment) and a late charge from South Florida.
I know we're not a part of the Big East but Southern Miss did land a 4* running back from Miami today.

Just when you thought the recruiting saga of North Fort Myers, Fla. running back Noel Devine was over with his commitment to West Virginia, things aren't so simple. Now it appears that Devine won't be signing with anyone.

Deion Sanders has stepped in and shook things up. "Noel isn't going to sign today," said a clearly frustrated James Iandoli, the head coach at North Fort Myers. "He had a long conversation with Deion Sanders last night and Deion told him to wait. I don't know if that means he'll visit Florida State this weekend or not but it doesn't appear that that's what this is about. Deion wants him to go to prep school and take his time and visit more schools then."

Devine, a 5-foot-8, 170-pounder with amazing quickness, was all set to sign with Rich Rodriguez and the Mountaineers last night.

"The last I spoke to him he was all set and we were ready to end it," Iandoli said. "But this morning he tells me that Deion thinks he shouldn't sign so it's between them now. If Noel wants to delay things and not sign, there's not much I can do. But dealing with West Virginia and all the other schools today hasn't been fun. It hasn't been a good day."

Devine is ranked as the No. 1 all-purpose running back in the country and has taken official visits to Alabama and West Virginia. He was also considering Florida State and Florida at the time of his decision.
Props to coach Kelly for keeping QB Chazz Anderson when Mark Dantonio tried to steal him and take him with him to Michigan State. Cincinnati has been going head-to-head with a ton of higher caliber BCS programs for recruits like Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, and Notre Dame. Notice it's mostly against Big Ten schools (Notre Dame basically being in Big Ten territory). That's HUGE for UC and the Big East since it opens up the Big Ten recruiting territory to the Bearcats and other Big East programs since UC is getting a lot of exposure in there.

Devine called him, and Deion has apparently told him to possibly go to a prep school, and look at many other schools not just FSU.. b/c apparently Devine had the cold feet, Deion didnt try to steal him for Bobby.. At least that is what I am hearing out of Florida..
