For those that doubted the master plan:

You always know that when a DI program starts off by talking about GPA, that the W-L record has more L's than W's...

If we have a 100% graduation rate, does that mean we will NEVER recruit kids likely to leave early for the NBA? Just a question for the coach...

Mr Happy

...or does it mean UC has a plan in place to better monitor these kids in the classroom.

If I got hired and were in Mick's position of having to graduate these kids.......I'd want a sister rose type person to kick them in the butt and check on them daily. I'd have someone calling their teachers and making sure they were going to class, etc., etc.

Do they have such a person? Have they instituted this kind of academic watchdog?

They should.
As I've pointed out before, Huggins recent teams...the last 5 years he was here had a ton of Academic Success in the classroom.. Two seasons his teams lead CUSA in GPA. I'm very happy our students are doing well, but I will never accept that the firing of Huggins was the cause of it.

Reality check on Sister Rose. She's not some taskmaster and definitely not a butt kicker. She is more a coddler who runs interference for the players. Favorite Sister Rose story: certain XU tennis player gets drunk the night before an exam and doesn't study. Calls Sister Rose and asks if she can get his exam date changed the morning of the exam. Sister Rose, "Oh okay." XU plays the game well. First off, they hand out the degrees like bubble game. Case in point: How many prop 48s did they have that magically graduated in 3 years and started grad school the 4th year. They'd have you believe these kids turned into Rhodes Scholars b/c of the academic quality of XU. Even the idiot that just got busted on drug charges and working at XU had a master's degree. I want our kids to get good grades and get degrees but I want them earned the hard way and not through some slick dept that gets favors from profs and runs interference for them.
Lastly, I think we did pretty good grade-wise in the latter part of Huggs tenure. It just wasn't trumpeted like it is now.

Every X basketball player takes a class in their first semester titled "Time Management". The "teacher" is Sister Rose. Let's see -- she is their teacher, their academic advisor, their tutor... If she wasn't a nun their is no way she would be allowed to do that at any credible university. Can you say, "Conflict of interest?"

Their "grad rate" is one of the saddest jokes there is in education -- any level.
you're dead on. i could tell you more stories about the interference that is run for their athletes.

I've always thought that this was the case--but the media in this town LOVES XU!! Are they all Jesuits? Or XU grads? I've never understood it...Maybe it's just because they are the smaller school...

everybody feels sorry for the underdog. that is what they have been since the early 1990's, so everyone patronizes them because they were never as good as the big bad "thugs" at UC.

Beyond doing things like getting profs to change exam dates, calling and basically handing out degrees, they run all kinds of interference on the conduct side as well. I have a relative that played on the team several years back and the stories he had about some of the stuff that went on in the dorms were pretty amazing. TJ Johnson and another player would get absolutely trashed and then proceed to run wild in the dorms. TJ started trashing half the floor of his residence hall. Students called the cops and of course the cops wanted to but could not arrest him b/c they were told not to. The guy basically couldn't be controlled and nothing was done. There are more.

Murph, the next time I see you, I have some stories that will curl your toes. I didn't get them second hand -- right from the horse's mouth (no not Zimpher).
