Lennie Acuff - UAH Chargers

Great execution!
I would love to see what this guy could do with top D1 talent. I always wished Pastner had tried to get him as his top asst, but he probably wouldn't have listened, anyway. Not sure he'd want to go anywhere as an assistant though. He has a pretty good gig right now, but I can't imagine that he wouldn't bolt for $1M/year for a D1 head job. (Yes, I did just type head job.[/php])

I honestly think not having a willingness to listen is JP's greatest negative. He believes floor coaching is not essential so he sees nothing to gain from becoming a better floor coach. He thinks "good" talent comes ready-made with fundamentals and skills that don't need to be honed so he doesn't bother - or they can just be overcome with better athleticism. Just recruit well-enough & roll the ball out on the court. He is stubborn with his beliefs confirmed by his salary & perceived success . Otherwise, surely he would recruit an assistant coach that knows how to teach & coach talent up & knows how to manage a game with what he has to work with. And maybe even recruit a point guard.
If the best we can do is UAH's coach then we were talking about shutting down the wrong program on here for a long time

Wow, that must have been a really interesting conversation you had with Josh for him to explain how he sees the world of basketball. I am really impressed that he opened up and was so frank and honest with you about how his mind works. What did he say was going to be his next move?

The fact that he coaches at UAH doesnt mean that he isnt a great coach. It simply means that that is where he is currently coaching. There are great coaches in D2 and there are not-so-good coaches in D1. Go check them out on Jan 12th when they play CBU. I bet his team will beat them and with a lot less talent than Memphis has. I assure you that it will be a well-played game.

Dudes been coaching them for 18 years if he was all that someone would have snatched him up by now.
funny how I have the polar opposite impression of CJF's approach. 0 to 2 star rated over achievers versus, well.. you know.

course, I try and take everything I read out here with a grain of salt. even my own post...
Pastner is in the bottom 15% of coaches nationwide. Wed be better off with 85% of the coaches and that includes D2 and NAIA. Take your pick

sorry Ill take the D1 coach with a .74 win percentage over a D2 coach with a .65 win percentage

With all of those divisions we are probably looking at 775 coaches that are better than Pastner. It is INCREDIBLE that overall, we have been a top 25 program for the last 4 years with a coach that is in the bottom 15% of his profession.

Oh, one more thing...

Link?

I would vote for this guy. Now his teams are fun to watch and they have a definte identity. Jim Crutchfield at West Liberty

D2 is fun to watch because your frontcourt usually doesn't have anyone taller than 6 foot 6. Games is a bit faster at that level.

Do you have a link that shows we finished in the top 25 any of the last 4 years?

If you can't make the round of 32 you can't be top 25.

but...... CBU is division 2. LOL I'm just all for any coach with a system that can plug in players each year. We just need a definite identity aside from mass confusion.

You don't have to have private conversations with JP to conclude he is stubborn. Every time he puts a team on the floor he persists with his same approach. Listen to his interviews (especially the one prior to the UVA games last year -Wash. Post?, when he talked openly about his coaching philosophy), no changes, no adjustments either related to his personnel or the opposition. Same as how he recruits, he doesn't recruit pieces to a puzzle that will make a team, instead he just seems to go down the ESPN rankings list until he gets someone to bite (i.e., no point guard), & despite encouragement from media & fans alike, JP refuses to hire an assistant coach with established & proven teaching skills. Have you ever seem one of his practices? assistant coaches perform more like managers or facilitators than coaches with little evidence of a plan, just a reaction to the issues of the last game, little apparent organization & discipline, but lots of JP oration.
