He basically admits he won't be talking much UC over the next few months. Trying to justify reducing UC coverage and increasing more BS topics. I find it interesting because he started the poll and UC got out to a huge lead and then it seemed to restart. Either way, not good that those who make decisions about programming are thinking this way.

From his blog:

Here are the final results of our yearly poll:
Who your favorite college basketball team?

35% Cincinnati
29% Kentucky
12% Xavier
6% Ohio State/Dayton
5% Other
3% Louisville
1% NKU, Miami, Wright State
----------------
21,284 votes

Observations:
While certainly an unscientific poll, this continues to underscore how splintered the interests in college basketball have long been in this area. This area is a melting pot of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana. As a result, the college basketball pie is cut into many small slices. This isn't Lexington where UK is king, South Bend, where Notre Dame owns the town, or Columbus, where the Buckeyes rule. We see similar splintering for college football. I heard Tommy Tuberville mention to Dan Hoard last week about UC needing to find new fans and/or convert fans of other programs. I remember discussing that concept over lunch with Brian Kelly years ago. We talks about growing Bearcats, grabbing kids when they were young, signing free agent fans that didn't have teams or causing fans of other teams to switch allegiances. I have done the college football version of this poll every year and UC struggles to grab 50% each year.
From my standpoint, talk radio is about talking about what the most people are interested in and talking about. That is much easier to do with Reds and Bengals for MLB and NFL talk. In this college basketball case, UC received the most votes, yet their total is just over 1/3 of this vote.
I love talking college football and college basketball. Yet I have remind myself to try and cast a wider net with topics, rather than target a specific school. Example: The college football playoff, conference realignment, the NCAA basketball tournament.

Previous results 2012-2013:
Cincinnati: 44%, 37%
Kentucky: 17%, 19%
Xavier: 13%, 13%

Thanks Lance. You continue to justify my decision to not listen to your show.

Sincerely,
Bearcatmill
Have not listened for years, don't care for the guy and what he does.
I haven't listened to local sports talk in a long time. I think the quality is really lacking, no matter the topic. UC fans regularly complain about the lack of Bearcat coverage though. I would imagine they have lost a lot of UC listeners over the years, with the exceptions of games and coaches show.
Fake name, fake poll
Of course it was Lance who said he left the UC game after the first quarter to go over to RedsFest...

If he was really going to follow the results of his poll, he'd be giving UC basketball 1/3 of his time. But instead he says, "Well the market is fragmented so I won't give them any time."

Hope you had a nice time at RedsFest, Lance.

New Nippert might help some, but again as I have said this 1,000 times, "game day experience larger dedicated tailgating" that is easy to find, park etc. Casual fans love it.

Oh and Lance is a tool. Mo might talk big 12 today? Is he having Mike Decourcey on today?
One more observation -

This is Cincinnati. Not Lexington, not Columbus, not South Bend.

You should be talking about UC, Xavier, Miami, and NKU to some extent. In this day of internet radio there is no need to attempt to appease fans of schools not located in this city.

You talk about the Reds and Bengals 95-99% of the time so the minimal amount of college talk we get does not amount to much anyway.

And internet polls are essentially useless, so if you are basing your programming on that then you need to rethink what you are doing.

ps - I didn't know there was a poll since I don't go to his web page anymore.
Who still listens to sports talk, anyways? With all the current sources for nearly real time info, that medium seems as current and viable as a tape deck.
I'm not going to bash the guy, but the bottom line is he doesn't cover the local teams I care about so I don't listen. I didn't vote in his poll because I didn't know it existed because I never listen to his show because he doesn't cover the bearcats. Yada yada yada around and around, chicken or the egg. Nobody there cares, neither do I, everyone loses.

This. I used to listen, got tired of his total BS. He sucks as a radio show host, I haven't listened to him in years.

I only listen to AM nowadays when there's some huge breaking news or it's game coverage.

Currently in my car CD player is The Smiths. It's been in there for awhile. I win at life.
Hmmmm, my scientific poll:

[] Lance is a tool

[] Same as above

Enuff said!
All in all, Lance is not that intelligent. He says, "While certainly an unscientific poll..."

Statistics is a branch of Mathematics. It is not a "science".

Even when talking about the Bengals, he sprinkles in stuff about baseball. He is so fixated on baseball that it is all but impossible to listen to him. Perhaps he should take a look at the median income of Bearcat fans and compare with Reds fans. The data just might be enlightening. But those who live at the lower end of the intelligence scale probably would fail to understand what that means.

+4.

Aside from the games and the coaches show, it has appeared UC receives less and less coverage on "The Home of the Bearcats" and its sister station the past couple seasons. There are three or four dedciated programs each week in the afternoon/evening to discuss Bengals in the fall and winter. I got Lap and Dan, Rocky and Lance, Rocky and Mo, Dhani Jones, etc. There really is no reason for me to listen to Sports Talk in Cincinnati since I know there is a 99% chance they will not talk about UC.

As to basketball, there used to be a time when there was a lot of UC basketball talk in the winter. For whatever reason, it seems the only time WLW/1530 brings UC basketball up is for something negative. On the otherhand, maybe it is just me but I swear Chris Mack is a guest on those stations a few times a week.

Bottom line, I am tired of how the radio treats UC. It is long time for the university to do something about it. Unfortunately they can't afford to terminate the contract with Clear Channel. They have the death grip on this town. Maybe it is time for UC to simply throw some money at them. Buy air time like UK and Louisville do. Hire your own guys to cover UC athletics for a couple hours a day. They have to do something because the radio is a major obstacle for UC to grow their fan base in town.
Lance caters to the people dumb enough to listen to his show.
I listen to Mo when he has a rundown that includes Bearcat talk (with Bearcat specific guests). I like Mo generally, but talk radio gets to be too much with callers. Unless I hear Lance has someone on I really want to hear I don't listen to Lance.

I know Mo is a "UC guy" but I can't stand to listen to his show. He spends too much time monologuing. He might go a whole hour where he goes on some rant. Aside from an occasional chime-in from Lindsey, you don't hear from anyone else.

To me good Sports Talk involved at least individuals and the two mix in sports with pop culture references and humor. You bring in relevant guests and you take a bunch of short calls (note: you don't argue with the caller you simply quickly address their take and move on to the next call. I have heard both Mo and Lance argue with a caller for 15 minutes and then for the next hour rant on the caller's take).

I'd rather listen to mo monologue than any host take callers. Most callers are awful. I prefer the guests to anything else though.
