It is clear we are heading to an 8 game playoff. In that format there are enough slots available so that determining a clear conference champion is not needed. The conference championship game is often a rematch, and it adds an extra game that should simply be part of the playoff against a team from a different conference.

The ideal model is already there for everyone to see in the FCS playoffs. We just need to eliminate the stupid bowls that are from another era and the conference championship games that are part of the BCS era. As a supporter of a team that competed in the playoffs, a 16 team playoff is much more exciting than the FBS system. No telling how much $$$$ it would generate.

12 game regular season
No conference championship game
16 team playoff

Make it happen.
I think we are heading for an 8-team playoff too, but I don't think it will happen until the contract for the 4-team playoff is over. If that happens, the Big 12 will have already imploded by then if they don't get a CCG.

I do like the idea of a 16-team playoff and no CCG's better than what we have -- unless the CCG's act as the first round of a 16-team playoff. That I would be okay with as well.
Conference championship games are revenue controlled by the conference, not by others. They aren't going away. Schools like revenue they control and don't have to share.

It will be interesting to see how much the playoff hurts attendance in the conference championship games as fans wait to attend the playoff. This year was definitely the worst attended sec championship game. Part of that was because of Missouri, but some Bama fans may have chosen to attend the playoff game and national title.

Conferences other than the sec have struggled with CCG attendance. If it gets worse as a result of the playoff, that may lead to eliminating them or at least incorporating it into an expanded playoff where the conference keeps the revenue.
