Not surprising to Me. obviously NIU would switch conferences, but the MAC as a whole moving to the FCS wouldn't be that far fetched.
If the rest of the conference wants to drop, good riddance you loonies. I have no desire to see NIU drop to FCS. Screw that noise. I think we have the right leadership in place to ensure that does not happen.

NIU has built a national brand and have 58 wins since 2010, they would go independent before they dropped to the FCS. That would never happen. But the majority of the MAC dropping? yeah I can see that.

Overall, it might make good sense for most of the MAC schools. If it does happen, you can count on NIU, Toledo, Buffalo and probably a couple of others bolting immediately. That could be OK.

With the exception of the programs that have ambition to succeed on a national level, or have some sort of national relevance and knowledge (i.e. NIU, Toledo, maybe a couple others), the rest of the MAC would probably drop down to FCS. Those that have that ambition will leave if they get the chance.
I need to clarify my "...".

I mean that is if the whole MAC would drop...which obviously wouldn't happen. My bad lol.
I think these writers are making themselves looking stupid and misinformed anyways. The MAC unanimously voted to follow the P5 lead and adopt an athletic stipend once its launched. If the MAC took this stance, why in the hell would you even discuss a drop to FCS.... You just unanimously voted to increase costs significantly.
Not going to happen. The WHOLE MAC? It's a pretty stable conference, despite not being $$ by any means. The article's just hypothetical. I would love to see the weaker teams of the MAC drop off from football -- and us bringing in some better talent.
It makes sense for teams like emu where in fcs they could actually win a few games. But teams like NIU, Toledo, and Buffalo are all in it for the long haul.

From where? The only schools who would choose to join the MAC are FCS teams. Adding some schools in North Dakota won't do anything and there aren't any other regional FCS teams that are ready to play with the better teams in the MAC.
I think they're just trying to get hits on their website. I mean, c'mon. Really?

Again, pipe-dream like the MAC going FCS -- but bringing in Marshall, Temple again (replacing EMU, Akron) -- or yes, some FCS programs from Missouri Valley and such who bring good BBall + have good football programs. ND State would compete in the MAC Very Well on Day 1. Adding scholarships and such and going FBS -- would only increase their program. Northern Iowa would be a consideration as well.

I wouldn't be scrambling for FCS teams to add -- but over time, some can be good as we all know. IF there was a big shakeup not just in the MAC but in other conferences with teams dropping off, it would cause teams to move from one conf to another -- and absorbing a couple other G5 teams not toooo far from the midwest would be great.

The guy who runs Hustlebelt these days goes to EMU, or is recently graduated. I'm sure it makes sense to him.
As a side note -- and what the article's talking about (pure Hypotheticals, a What-IF) -- I think the MAC going to FCS wouldn't be such a horrible situation.

Think about it: 9 games a season is playing within our conference and an FCS team anyway. Basically, you'd probably just see another FCS OOC replacing a fellow mid-major team in one's OOC. You really wouldn't see much difference -- except post-season -- or lack thereof.
Click bait by Huskie Belt. This really makes the MAC look small time!
Yes, click-bait. But an interesting notion. Silly to assume that's going to happen.

Most likely it's not a MAC-thing, but a G5 thing. P5 is moving toward isolation (keeping money within P5 not overall FBS was the first move).

I would see a new, 3rd, mid-range subdivision in which Missouri Valley jumps in, and there'd be a 6-conference "G6" division with a playoff, while the FBS teams couldn't play FCS teams but could play the G6s OOC.

I actually would like that -- and something along those lines seems like it will happen within 10 years or so.
The MAC (L)East might want to try division 5.
