Full Version: So much for all our great three point shooters.

I'm enjoying our winning all but one of our games this season so far, but the one great disappointment has been our three point shooting. I thought we'd have a number of guys shooting near or over 40% this season, but so far we're pretty horrible.

I'm hopeful that Ben Dillard and James Reid will shoot a lot better than they did today. Couldn't get anything to fall. We're going to have to make more three pointers to win some games. You can't always depend on shots around the basket and foul shots to win.04-cheers
Nothing pleases you guys.
Just being realistic. You can make all the three point shots you want in practice, but until you start making them in the games, it means nothing. I think most of us are pleased with how the team is doing. But on a team that supposedly has a lot of good three point shooters, we're underachieving. We're not going to be able to dominate good teams inside like we did against UCA. We will have to make some outside shots. And I believe we're more than capable. We're just not doing it right now. When our best shooters who are playing go nothing for six, that's not good. First of all, our good shooters should be taking more shots than that. And we need to be setting more screens on the perimeter for them. That's exactly what UCA was doing. Yes, we won the game. But only because we had far superior strength and quickness. But against equal talent, you had better have some outside shooters taking and making shots.
Luckily it looks like we have a good inside game. Teams that "live and die" with the 3, will die at some point. UCA hit a ton of 3's, but what good did it do them? I hate having a team that is reliant on the 3 point shot, because if you have an off night you lose. For a Sun Belt team, who has to win 3 or 4 tournament games to get to the NCAA tournament, the odds are you will have one off night in the tournament and then you are done. I think our 3 point shooting will be fine- I just hope we don't rely on it too much or jack up too many of them. I doubt Steve will let that happen. He will insist we only take "good" shots and thus are overall 3 point percentage will be good.
We're taking "good" shots now for the most part, but they're not falling. It's like football. You have to be efficient in all three phases of the game. Offense, defense and special teams. Same with basketball. You have to have a balanced offense and a good defense. Without either one, you lose. UCA had a fine offense, but their defense and inside game wasn't up to ours. They scored enough points to win. They just didn't have the defense to stop our guys.
What is odd is that we were knocking down 3s like clockwork in the warmup. We have four guys on the roster who can shoot the 3. We are fine there, but some nights they just do not fall.
With the shooters we have on this team, it is unlikely that all of them are going to be cold on the same night.

Our three-point shooting is ABSOLUTELY THE LEAST of my worries this year.
What is ABSOLUTELY THE MOST worrisome thing to you this year?

The possibility of key injuries.
If James White gets hurt, we are in BIG trouble.
That's when Mariek will get the chance to earn his scholarship!
