As of today UAB is 87th in average football game hone attendance for Div 1 schools. By the logic of some people in our state UAB and 42 other institutions would stop fielding football teams because of so-called lack of support. Of course that number includes Troy, USA, Ohio, Tulane, SMU, MTSU, Wyoming (state school), so on and so forth. Our attendance increased over 200% from last season...just think if the administration and BOT supported the coaches what we could achieve on the field and off.
Total Attendance:131047
Average Attendance:21841
But it won't matter to the trailer park tiders because UAB shouldn't play D1 football because so sayeth the son of the Bear.

Hopefully Dr Watts is working on that On Campus Stadium because he said we needed to show support first. Well our attendance is up 200% Dr Watts.
There are those who think every athletics program outside of the Power 5 shouldn't exist. The playoff selection committee is their king.
I want UAB to have a football program, but I would totally support a law stating college athletic departments have to break even if they want to continue to exist. Not make money, just break even.

As a whole, I think such an effort would have a more negative effect on women's sports than it would on football. Title 9 will keep anything like that from happening.

You don't like college sports much, huh?

The NCAA is a non profit and making money is not the mission of collegiate sports.

Well, then you'll have about 25 college football teams to watch...

My math isn't the strongest, but I think doubling attendance is a 100% increase. And that is still excellent!

So we are averaging 21,841 in attendance per game?

What did we officially average last year? Around 11,000?

We averaged 10548 last year.

I realize the irony but why can't this logic work for UAB football when it works for a multi million dollar company?

This would seriously mean that Alabama and Auburn would be the only two college's with athletic programs for any division in Alabama. Heck, Auburn had to subsidize to break even on their last report.

This whole money thing is a terrible argument.

Yes. The problem is, the powers that be can use, "Because I said so!" as their argument if they like.

I could care less about the purpose of the NCAA. It's not a government run institution. I don't agree with the NCAA being a "non profit" because it clearly isn't.

Our universities are government run institutions that use public funds and I care about government waste. I prefer the government not to waste money. If the program is supporting itself that's great but at the very least it shouldn't be wasting money. I realize that's not an opinion held by everyone but that's the opinion I hold. It would be hypocritical of me to hold that position only for things I don't care about.

I said the athletic department as a whole. I don't really think this would be the case if such a thing were to happen.

Right now only roughly 20ish athletic programs break even or profit.

Seriously, what planet do you live on? Football makes money for some some schools. Basketball for some. Every other sport is pretty much a loser. You think the golf team is making the school money? Or the diving team?

College athletics were not created to make money.

That's kind of my point. If such a thing were to happen athletic programs would definitely have to cut programs but that doesn't mean they would have to cut football. I think you would see an increase in the number of revenue-producing sports programs and a decrease in the number of revenue-eating sports programs. I don't see that as a bad thing and truly think everyone would benefit from such a change.
