I would think it should be the AD, or someone other than the coach, representing the AD. The coach is probably looking for someone he can beat, while the AD is probably looking for money to run the program. I don't know how most programs do it, but if I recall correctly, I believe our coaches do the scheduling. That could constitute a conflict of interest.04-cheers

I think the AD provides guidelines- ex. how many money games, how much we can spend to bring somebody in, how far we can travel, etc., but the coaches do the actual scheduling.
I have never known exactly who was in charge of scheduling. Seems to me if money is not an issue, plenty of money coming in as in most cases with the big 5, then the head coach in basketball could have big influence over the non-conference schedule. But in our program IMO the head coach should have very little to say about it.
I imagine the coach does it, but the AD has to sign off on it.

Don't know how you guys do it, but we have an Assistant AD who is in charge of scheduling for us. Obviously coaches and the AD have input on what they are looking for, and there is full communication, but we delegate someone else to handle a lot of the calls. Mohajir has handled some football scheduling however...simply because of the amount of money involved.
I know the old ad told the coaches who NOT to schedule. And it had little to do with money or or fan interest.
Kevin Fricke did the scheduling when he was here, and I think he was very good at it.
Fricke was the man

Interesting comment. Could you elaborate?

The best.
That would be a very good question for one of the Meet the Coaches type affairs. I really would like to know how the process works. If I had to venture a guess, an assistant does the actual legwork of making the contacts, seeing if there is interest, etc., with the Head Coach staying in touch. But given the substantial financial commitments that are involved, I cannot imagine that the AD does not have the final sign-off to the process.

Told them not to schedule in state schools. And if they did he told them they better not lose or he would make it very difficult on them. Of course, he did that anyway.

I assumed that's why we hadn't scheduled UCA. But we did this year and that was before Chris got canned.

And I doubt we will lose to them this year.
Sometimes they had to schedule them just to get a game when nobody else was available. Catch 22.
That's pathetic that we were afraid to schedule UCA because they might beat us. And we complain that Arkansas won't play in state teams for the same exact reason. UCA should be a very good rivalry since we're both D1 in basketball now and right down the road from each other. In fact, I'd love to see them in the Sun Belt where we, UCA and ASU would all be rivals in the same conference. How nice that would be.

No reason not to play UAPB either, but apparently we can't afford to pay them what they get to go play at bigger schools.

True, and I'll just about guarantee that every OC game they play will pay more than we could. With finances being what they evidently are, I'm surprised we're not playing Philander Smith, Arkansas Baptist, John Brown University, and Shorter College. And Shorter doesn't even play basketball anymore do they?
