Doughty is being rumored to possibly be getting a medical 6th year. That would be interesting to see if it happens. Thoughts?

Not heard anything about that but I would not complain. He was injuried in his first year starting during first game I think
If Doughty is back, and if Brohm can develop a defense for next year, the Hilltoppers would, indeed, be a formidable team. I'd pick them to win the division.

WKU reminds me of Marshall of two years ago...all offense that had to run up big numbers to out score everyone they played, and they couldn't do it. (5-7, as I recall.) Things started turning around last year (10-4) with the addition of a good, now great, defense to go along with a fine offense.

If memory serves, I believe it was the 3rd play of the game when it happened.
Part of me would love to have him back for a 6th year.

A small nagging voice in the back of my head tells me to move on. Doughty has had his time, and this season has performed well beyond everyone's expectations. I don't know if he could follow that up again next year. I do know that he is immobile, and seems to cave under pressure.

I think if he stays we also run the risk of losing some of our promising young QBs on the team.

I don't guess I would be upset either way. I doubt the NCAA does us any favors anyway, so he probably won't be back even if we wanted him to.

Actually not everyone....

I expected this and more out of him with this system. If you read HH before the BG game I said BD would be 2nd best on the list of QBs Western would be facing this year (if his name was on that list).

But even with the numbers, which mainly comes from yards after the catch, BD has made some poor reads in a lot of our games. Might be coaching or it might be BD but something has changed...

Western has stopped going over the middle on passes we KILLED teams with and instead BD is going outside more and more. And it's not a pass he's very good at making if there's decent coverage. He under throws a lot of them.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the kid we got from Bama can do. I know the coaches love his arm and running ability. But decision making is still the unknown. I know we would have at the very least 2 more wins if BD would/could run the ball.

BD did not start out that year as the starter...Jakes was the starter and BD replaced him in the game vs Indiana St . Our first series on 3rd down BD had a 8 yard run and ended his season on the injury

I dont know that it would be wise to wish away a guy like Doughty. Id take that 6th year and love it. There is another extreme, and not having doughty may remind you.

Lord knows we will miss Cato.

We will miss Cato just because of the things he does when he scrambles out of the pocket. Cato is a special talent that you don't get in every class.

But we have some talented guys behind him. Ive liked what Ive seen in Holcombe in the few snaps he has had. And didn't realize how big Michael Birdsong was until I watched ESPNs All Access with Marshall. Also 2015 signee Chase Litton will get to practice with the team this bowl season, and don't forget about Cole Garvin who is RS this season.

Ive always thought if you can get a 6th year for a player, you take it. The leadership alone is to valuable to pass up. Everyone at Marshall was thrilled when the NCAA granted James Rouse a 6th year last year. And he is having a monster year and also coaching the Freshman and Soph classes.

Holcombe isn't good enough to win cusa and beat our garvin for the backup role. Birdsong had average stats at JMU. Litton has huge potential and is our best bet IMO. None of them can do what Cato does for us in the offense, includng the mental things pre snap.

Rouse is a warrior. His stats are not what they were but he is taking the attention away from other guys like Blackmon so they can make plays. Glad to have rouse back for sure.

Alot of ? Marks next season. Losing most of the lines, center, qb, shuler, roberts at CB, our LB core players.... a lo to replace. I think 10 games is our ceiling, 8 wins likely next season with a new QB and probably a talent depleted and Heaterless coached defense. (Heater will get a new gig, no question. Phenomenal coach)
I would love a 6th season for BD....Be careful WKU fans what you wish for, because if we do not have BD next season, our offense maybe a little rough at least for the start of the season....

I couldn't wait for Jakes to graduate and despite rough start to last season, our offense has been putting up numbers like crazy which this season can be attributed to same offensive system, BD doing a better job of not throwing picks, and our WRs growing up...
Western's offense is putting up more yards mainly because we are running more plays....

there's only .4 of a yard per-play difference

6.3 to 6.7 and only .7 difference from Jakes last year...6.0 to 6.7 yards per-play in yards that's 45 yards a game for the 2012 team

I love Suler as a slot guy but he will easily be replaced by Foster or Green next year. Selby will most likely move to center and Dievers take Selby's place.

If Heater goes I feel we already have our DC on staff then in LBs coach Adam Fuller. Fuller was the DC at UTC from 08-12 and had the MOCs ranked 6th in defense in IAA.

I like Heater but the guy in a nomad. He has been a coach since 1976 and he hasn't stayed anywhere more than 3 years except his 5 year stint at Colorado from 93-98.

Do we lose some experience with new players stepping in next year, sure. Will it be like 09 and 10 when we had no depth at all and started a tom of RS and true freshman, not even close.

We still win 8-10 games next year.

Young guns you are an idiot sometimes. This just goes to show. Why would you not want the best QB in WKU history to leave for an unproven commodity?
Let's see... redshirt year (1), played 3 plays and hurt (2), didn't play at all (3), last year (4), this year (5). He should get the 6th year. It happens. I hope so.
Yeah, he probably will. Huge for WKU
The offense would be nuts. The defense can only improve. The schedule isn't as favorable as this year (@Vandy, @Indiana, Miami(OH), @LSU) but still isn't awful. Could be a special year.

All winnable games with LSU being the ( must play perfect game) game .
Doughty is good. The question is why he should do that. Why risk it? Would it not be beneficial for him to go to NFL now?

P.S. I was just reminded that Doughty had originally committed to FAU and then changed his mind to go to WKU. He certainly made a good decision for his career.

I don't think he will sniff the NFL right now. The system we run just fits his style. I'm sure he would like a year to learn more and expand his game which could ( maybe) get him drafted. He is very one dimensional and can't run, but he is a very good QB for the most part
