Villanova, Albany football coaches have angry words after Wildcats victory

Two carries by a walk-on running back in the final minute of Villanova's convincing, 48-31 Colonial Athletic Association win over visiting Albany set off verbal volleys between Albany coach Greg Gattuso and his counterpart, Villanova's Andy Talley.

After Albany's Brian Parker scored on a 25-yard pass from quarterback Will Fiacchi for the final touchdown of the game with 49 seconds remaining, Villanova had one last possession after downing the ensuing kickoff on its own 25-yard line.

That is when senior walk-on Fred O'Connor unintentionally became part of the ending conflict.

O'Connor received two straight carries, the first for 19 yards and the second for a yard before time expired.

After the game, Gattuso let Talley know he was unhappy that Villanova ran the two plays instead of taking a knee.

"I went to shake his hand, and he gave me that [complaining], and I just waved him off and went over and did the [television] interview," Talley said.

Gattuso, a member of Penn State's 1982 national championship team, expressed his displeasure during the postgame news conference.

"I was very disappointed with Coach Talley at the end of the game," Gattuso said. "Thirty seconds left, [he] doesn't want to kneel. He mentioned Joe Paterno to me, and how he looked up to him. I can promise you this, he's no Joe Paterno after this, doing something like that."

Talley bristled at the Paterno comments.

"Joe Paterno is a legend, I would never pretend to be like Joe Paterno or anybody else," Talley said. "I am Andy Talley. Check my record, pal. When he gets to that point, he can come talk to me about coaching."

Gattuso, who was 97-32 in 12 seasons at Duquesne and is 6-5 in his initial season at Albany, had more unflattering comments about the end of the game.

"I think that was so little class it shocked me," he said. ". . . I just think it's a rookie coach mistake, and if it was a young coach it would be one thing, but somebody of his stature to do something like that is shocking to me."

Then Gattuso fired this final salvo.

"We ran the ball in the fourth quarter, we didn't use timeouts, we didn't onside kick," he said. "I think we did it the way you have to. We are certainly going to try to score, I think everybody wants to score. When there is 30 seconds on the clock, the great ones kneel, period."

Talley was seething at Gattuso's comments.

"We wanted to get a senior running back in the game who is a four-year walk-on, and we wanted to give him the ball," Talley said. "It is not like we were throwing the ball."

After O'Connor's initial 19-yard gain, his teammates were genuinely happy, congratulating a player who was rewarded for four years of dedication. It was senior night, and his parents attended the game from Virginia.

O'Connor entered the game with six career carries for 18 yards.

It wasn't lost on Talley that the final Albany touchdown was scored by starting tight end Brain Parker from Fiacchi.

"He kept his first team in through the whole game, and for him to come in here and criticize me - are you kidding me?" Talley said. "I made my bones in this program. Let him go get 10 playoffs and a national championship and he can come here and rip me."

Talley said he didn't like the way Gattuso made an issue of it in the postgame news conference.

"For him to come in a press conference and criticize me in front of my hometown press for something like that?" Talley said. "I mean, if you are going to be upset, then be upset that I am trying to run up the score."

After the news conference, Talley said he would reach out to Gattuso and explain his reasoning for running the ball those two plays.

This was the first meeting between the teams; it's only Albany's second season in the CAA.

Always thought Talley was a class act. Sounds like the ALbany coach was a jacka*s..
Calling out one of the classiest coaches in football is stupid. Talley is 100% right.

Shut up Gattuso.
Wahhhhhh some team played a full 60 minutes against meeeeeeee.
How about playing football? It wasn't like they were winning by 30+ or something. Instead of whining, maybe you should teach your team to tackle somebody.
So you are saying up basically gave up at the end of the 3rd?

"We ran the ball in the fourth quarter, we didn't use timeouts, we didn't onside kick," he said. "I think we did it the way you have to. We are certainly going to try to score, I think everybody wants to score. When there is 30 seconds on the clock, the great ones kneel, period."
I can't stand this kind of stuff. Dude is a senior walk on. Let the kid play. Quit whining.
Perhaps the Albany coach was confused about CAA football... Could be the Albany HC thought ODU was still in the league where teams are allowed to play only 55 minutes.
Good grief. A four year walk on with 6 career carries on Sr. day.
This cry baby needs to give it a rest. Woulda fit right in with Keeler...
Lucky for Talley, he didn't have our refs from yesterday. They would have flagged Villanova 15 yards and ejected some one for "Excessive playing of football"
Gattuso needs a tampon. It wasn't like they threw a bomb. Get ahold of reality. I've always kind of found Talley unlikable but loved his comment. "Check my record, pal".
What did we do against Liberty during the monsoon game in 2009? We were trying to take a knee and LU blew up our line, so we threw deep on the next play before taking another knee to end the game? Some coaches just don't know how to lose graciously.

Well that is Danny Rocco for you. Sounds like the Albany coach is cut from the same whining, b!tch cloth.
Tally is class. In '08 when we won on the Hail Mary play, he said some good things in the after game presser. I sent him an email to thank him and said that I hope we didn't get matched up in the playoffs. He sent me an email back thanking me and stated he wanted no more of JMU for that year. Unfortunately, for him, we did meet again.
Generally I agree with the folks on here about today's events as we know them.

Yet I have a different perspective on Andy Talley than the coach emeritus love fest I see here.

It was back in 1996, the last game of the season and we were 7-3 and hosting Villanova, who had a similar record. The winner would likely get an at large bid for the playoffs. Villanova controlled the game and was up 33-23 with the ball deep into our end of the field. As the clock rolled to under 30 seconds, Nova started running a no huddle hurry up offense, trying to move the ball, when one knee would end the game. They got inside our 15 yard line on what looked to be the last play of the game and as the clock wound down to zero. Nova called Time Out to get one final play in. It was now obvious that they were doing all they could to get one more score.

I couldn't believe it. I was yelling: Andy You got to be kidding me! Take a knee! Take a knee!

Andy avoided the class move, Nova scored and won 40-23.

I guess no one really cared during those Coach Wood years, but I remember. Actually I might have been the only JMU witness left in the stadium at the end of the game, as virtually everyone had already left. So after his 30 plus years of coaching and everyone feels he is great, I am the surviving naysayer.

(Ironically Nova went on to lose their playoff game to ETSU, who was so excited to beat Andy they dropped football.)

If any of you guys who know me, want to ask me about this, please do so next time you see me. My story is much much better with living color.
LOL! Nothing like a catfight between two opposing coaches to further sweeten a euphoric win streak. Thanks for the entertainment, guys. Cage match?

And Gapusso, take a Midol, baby. 03-hissyfit

Thank you RoadWarrior for providing a different perspective of Talley. There is a reason he is still at Villanova... The guy is a db (and that doesn't mean defensive back.) I'm still waiting for a young reporter to ask Andy why he changed his last name to Talley many years ago. A volcano would erupt!

Totally forgot about that...wish I had been reminded about THAT bit of Rocco douche-baggery before Saturday. I HATE THE TICS
I disagree with you guys. I see it more Gapusso's way. If Tally wanted to get the senior the ball, then give it to him in VU's previous drive. The game was pretty much in had at that point. With 30 sec left and up by that much, you kneel. Gapusso is right and good for him for voicing his opinion. Should be a good rivalry going forward. Let's see how Tally feels if/when the tables are turned and Albany is running in the final min.
