I've never actually done this thing. Some buddies and I are thinking about it for this weekend. Do we need to spend thousands for a site like at LSU? Did we need to show up on Thursday like at College Station?

What are the best spots and when do we need to show up?

Best spots are in "West Lot" (on the east side of the stadium), along the roadways, ideally along the ones on The MOB path. Not positive, but if you have a beer of appropriate quality for Chuck and present it to him as The MOB comes by, they may stop and play for you.

Gates should be up all morning due to it being Homecoming weekend, so just roll in whenever and grab a spot. Earlier probably works better.

Tailgating is incredibly easy at Rice.

All you need to do is show up, park, and start drinking. No need to reserve spots and they now have people that help to make sure you know where you can tailgate. They leave open the portion of West Lot between the roads and Peking lots for people to set up tents. We always tailgate near the southern stadium entrance, and with the new tennis facility, I'm not sure if you can tailgate near the north end anymore, anyways.
We often set up and cook under the live oak trees the parking lot and the soccer fields. That way the kids get to play on the open fields away from traffic while we enjoy the campus.

I only go to one game a year, but...

We used to set up near the weight room in the grassy area right there. Being able to tailgate under trees and off the asphalt is very nice.

The Rice Rugby alum/student game will be at 9:15 on those fields. Come out an support the team.
The rules are you if you tailgate in the parking lot you can't take up another spot to put your stuff in. You can only do it in front of your vehicle. That being said, you can take the corner spots and use the areas marked with diagonal lines as tailgating areas. For obvious reasons these spots are very coveted, so get there early and claim your spot and don't be afraid to share the area.
If you see a guy with a fez parked over by the rugby field stop by and say hi.
I'm in Washington DC getting continuing education, so won't be there.
