Full Version: Yet another possible realignment?

So, I was reading an article today through an app on phone so I can't link it now, but here's the rumor it was talking about:

So, as the rumor goes, the Big 12 would add four new members -- Cincinnati, East Carolina, UCF and South Florida.

This would then lead to the AAC and CUSA merging into a huge 20 team conference.

Again, just a rumor, but the Big 12 wants to add teams to have a conference championship game and get WVU travel partners...

Thoughts?
So, the new C-USA would be:

East: ODU, Marshall, Temple, UConn, Navy, FIU, FAU, Mid. Tenn, WKU, UAB

West: SMU, Houston, Rice, Memphis, Tulsa, Tulane, La. Tech, So. Miss, UTSA, UTEP

This would be a program enhancement for ODU I think.
I don't see how a 20 team conference makes sense for either football or basketball -- but I suppose stranger things have happened. Frankly, while there may be further alignment, I don't see any of this happening as stated.
Why not just have 2 10 team conferences? I'd miss playing LT and UTEP though.
Need 12 teams for conference title game.

That's been the argument for 18 and 20-team conferences, that the divisions become de facto conferences, since there'd be no crossover play until the postseason. Play everyone in your division one in football (nine games) or basketball (18 games) and OOC the rest of the way.

But I can't imagine Texas and Oklahoma wanting to share their dinner with Cincinnati and three directional schools. Nothing against any of them, but the only way they get into the Big 12 is if Texas and Oklahoma are gone.
The requirement for 6 team divisions and the subsequent championship game between those divisions will likely be a thing of the past by January 2015 as the new P5 autonomy comes into play.
The ACC has led the "anti divisional" charge.

The Big 12 neither needs nor wants 4 more teams, and likely won't need two more in order to have the lucrative CCG next year. Even if it does it will only take two, not four. IMO it would be Cincy and a directional Fla team, but who knows.

There will be no G5 super conference as long as the College Football Payout maxes out at 12 teams. It would take quite a media contract to overcome the dilution of 12 teams money given to 20 programs.

So, for the next 10-15 years of the GoRs, we are likely to see very little movement.
If the AAC gets raided by the Big 12, then likely the replacements would probably come from CUSA.
JMU protestations to the contrary, markets, because of fees and guarantees will be a major factor, NOT current butts-in-the-seats popularity.

Look for the AAC to look at market size, long term potential, and travel partners criteria. AAC Targets then could include UNCC, ODU, UAB, and the F*Us, depending on what the AAC might lose to the Big 12.
This also could make Georgia State a longshot possibility

Don't expect CUSA to reload if it loses only two. Again, the CFP favors 12 teams or less.
The column was from that idiot in West Virginia who ripped us after the Marshall game. I don't know of any serious journalist who is taking him seriously.

Conferences will not merge unless the autobids in basketball are reconfigured. Losing a bid is too much money to lose (~$1.6 million)

TV shouldn't really care about conference sizes
If the AAC lost teams, they still wouldn't merge with C-USA. They'd take their pick of teams from C-USA, MAC, and the Belt.
No chance the Big XII takes anyone new unless Texas and Oklahoma leaves.

He should write for the Onion with the amount of fiction that is in his stories.

Yeah, but he's only funny in a "summer teeth" kind-of-way.
I haven't checked but a rumor like this, no matter how stupid it and the writer are, likely caused a 10 page count increase on the "latest Conference rumor" thread on the JMpoo boards. I'm sure they are packing their bags for their B1G invite
