I think it a problem with students but also a significant number of other fans head out early. Just take a look at the Ball State game! I stayed through the 2 hour 20 some minute delay until the end of the game. Of course being in a press box athletic department suite with an open fridge stocked with beverages along with food and snacks may have been a factor. :-)
MSU's student tickets are set up a whole lot different than Toledo's tixs are.
First, there are about 40,000 plus students at MSU. So to sell the 13,000 seats they have a lottery every year. If you are picked you can buy tickets at about $50 per game (last I heard). So there is some students who can not go to games that would like because they weren't picked in the lottery, or too expensive for tickets.

UT however has all students pay general fees as part of their tuition and a portion of that goes to athletics, which covers entry into all sporting events.
